When were Slip rings replaced by Delta rings?  According to retroblackrifle.com they were "not found on any retro rifle" so I assume they came into existence when the M16A2 was designed in 1983.   If so, no correct M16a1 should have a Delta ring. Right?

Also, can you simply replace a Delta ring with a Slip ring without needing to replace anything else?

Per Ekie's guides, the delta ring was used on early carbines (67-70), but no, they were not used on the 603/M16A1. Yes, you can simply replace the Delta with a slip. You have to remove the barrel, of course.

Right.

The delta ring was introduced on the XM177E1 carbine and then came back into use with the M16A2.

And why is it called a Delta ring?

Due to its triangular profile. ???

The flat one is callled a "slip-ring" because it slips back and forth to retain the handguards.

The one with the tapered grasping surface is called a "delta ring" because if you were to follow the taper out you would have a triangle. "Delta" is a Greek letter represented by a triangle.

Ah...So you remove the gas tube from the FSB before removing the barrel???...I've always just punched the FSB pins out and slid the sight/gas tube off rather than unpinning the gas tube...IIRC, I think I did try unpinning the gas tube once, but had difficulty pulling it out of the rear retainer/spring/delta ring...
