Nice!  I wasted today grinding the fence off a DPMS lower with a bench grinder, and trying to modify a bolt release with a Dremel.  I didn't finish grinding, and I ruined a perfectly good bolt release.

Sooo...I spent the rest of the afternoon looking at mini-mill advertisements.  I'm thinking about getting a small hobby-type vertical mill, about $500 worth.  By spending $500, maybe I won't ruin another $6 bolt release.

Thats what I probably should have done...I just like messing with stuff, and I have a bunch of A2 receivers lying around.  I'm still not done with it, need to finish grinding off the fence and profile the back left side.

Very nice!!   Its almost ready!   The paint looks very good, did it stick, (cure?) well.   Oh and is that a 601 sling?

Nice job!

I bought the handguards and the buttstock already painted on EE some time ago, as for the sling, yes it's an actual 601 sling.

Are you sure that is a 601 sling?  I've never seen one with sliding buckles.

I was told that, but hey it's an early one anyway. I'm not going to sweat it.

I was looking at mill/lathe ads, too...here's what I came up with -

It's not all that different from the Chinese/Harbor Freight 3in1 that I have now, except for one big important difference...Quick-Change Gearbox!!!

Not to sound mean, but it's not a 601 sling. Other nice 601 parts though.

I'm new to this board and was just wondering.  I have AF MANUAL 50-12 dated 30 August 1963 and the sling shown in the picture above is the only sling they show in this manual.  What does the 601 look like then?

Many of 'em were issued w/ a M-1 Garand/M-14 type sling from what I gather.

My dad has a pic with him holding one with exactly that style sling in '67-'68 @ Dong Ha IRRC.

I've been trying to get him to make copies of some of his pics so I can have ones to post.

The sling pictured through out 50-12 is the correct Colt 601 sling, part number 62149.  It lacks the "belt buckle" found on the USGI sling.

I'm sorry my mistake, I have the photo copies of AF Manual and 11W3-5-5-1 (31 August 1963)  all mixed together.  The AF Manual has no buckle but in the 11w3-5-5-1 manual it has the buckle on the sling.  So could they both be right?

Depends on your definition of right.  I go by factory original, and factory original at the time had no belt buckle.

Thanks, I understand what you mean.  Now I have to find something else when I thought I was done.  Would you know the total length of the sling with no buckle?  I might try and make one.

I still don't have such a sling, so I don't have any details such as length.

I have such a sling but it is from a 1964 SP1.  I would assume it is the same length as the 601 sling.  You need a BAR or M14E2 sling to make a 601 replica sling.

I believe the sling is 43.5" OAL.  Blanco_Diablo would know.  He has pics too.
