I have recently purchased my first AR. I have always been a Bolt-Action shooter, but am very excited about joining my AR relatives.haseI would like to know if there are any modifications that are a MUST, is it an A1 (it has the fixed handle and the rear sight is windage only), AND most importantly, is left-to-right play normal in the rear sight (about 1/16")? If not, how can it be fixed? I know that a lot of guys hate the "newbi" redundance, but I could not find the sight answer via "Search." Thank you for those who do have the patience! p.s. my father was the broker, and he snuck out to the range with it. the only thing that he metioned was that he was all over the target, and that he couldn't get the rear sight adjusted. i don't think that he realized the play in it. |

Rear sight play like that is not normal. I'm sure parts can be purchased to replace/fix it at not a lot of cost. I am guessing that your gun may have been assemble from a stripped receiver. Other readers may be able to tell by seeing a picture, but for $500 I doubt it was a pre-ban A1. |

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help! Here are a few pics that I just took. As for the price, my father and I helped a guy in debt. We aslo picked up a Colt Mark IV, Model 70. I believe that's what it is. It is in my dad's safe. And, a few others for cheap. Thanks again! (Pictures did not work. They are on my puter, not at a url. Is there another way?) |

Set up an account at like photobucket.com so you can have them hosted. We really need to see pics to get a better idea of what you have. Anyway, I believe that serial # is "pre-ban" i.e. before 9/94. So yes, it may be more in demand in certain "ban states." Otherwise, it won't command much more to most others since there's no ban now, except for a die-hard collector who wants an earlier A1 lower. There were a couple threads in the last few weeks about PWA, and one controversy over a guy asking "what's it worth?" and possibly violating the code of conduct. Check a few pages into the retro threads, I think you'll find some stuff. ETA: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=123&t=346804 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=123&t=346841 |

Thanks C6. Here goes...Fingers crossed! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2407/1791711322_baa54abefb_o.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2247/1790869709_b340a4d2da_o.jpg |
Stock looks nice from a distance. Ok, if you wanna be authentic-A1, here goes: - ditch the A1 pistol grip and replace with an A1 - ditch the A2 handguards and replace with A1 (triangular shape) - replace the delta ring with a flat handguard slip ring - make sure the flash hider is an A1, not an A2 with a closed bottom That's as much as I can tell from the pics, but it could look quite cool for very little cost. Check the Equipment Exchange for the parts. |

Thank again C6H1206! I just read the "Retro Forum Code of Conduct," and hope that my inquiries were not misunderstood. I am just interested in what I own, and not what it is worth. I don't think I will ever sell this beauty! I LOVE the retro look. The newer, flat-tops, etc, just don't hold my eye like this Retro beauty! As for the A1 authenticity...I like the idea! For now, I just have to replace that pesky rear sight! I haven't had the joy of shooting it yet..heThanks again! |

Thanks uxb. I am finding only A2 rear sight assemblies. I assume that these parts won't fit mine since mine does not have or need, the rear sight base. I am guessing that is what the previous owner put on this gun. Still staring! It's a handsome rifle. Sorry for the newbie question, but what does LMT stand for? |
I'd try PK Firearms for A1 sight parts: www.pkfirearms.com/store/get_alternate_items.aspx?id=88 LMT = Lewis Machine & Tool |
Thanks coctailer! I was waiting for a reply via email, from PK. They were prompt and curteous, but Midway had a complete kit, while PK had individual parts. I will definitely buy from PK in the future, but the kit you suggested fit the bill this time. I can't wait to get it in the mail. Thanks again. |
