A padded pipe wrench or vice grips will work fine.  Just snug, don't over tighten.

I figure some nice belt leather and vice grips should do the trick.

That might work, or it could be like the one I removed on a Colt 614 which was just as tight as a barrel nut.  Time, carbon and a tight factory installation can make these much tighter than you'd expect.  I would recommend using a proper wrench and securing the barrel and/or upper in a vise block.  Any other method can mark up your flash hider if you go too far.

ETA:  You did write INSTALL, not REMOVE...my mistake.  For installation, I just hand-tighten 3-prong and A1 flash hiders.  The lock washer holds them in place just fine.

I like mine just a smidge tighter than I can do by hand, so I take a round brass rod about 12" long and bend it so it fits between the prongs, and give it a bit of torque.

And another +1 for 45Bravo's wrench!

-1 for the special wrench.  Much too simple, and works too well.  Four +1s is just too much, so now one is cancelled out
