I have a Sp1 lower made in 1973 or 1974. What type of handgaurds were used at that time ,round or triangler. I also believe there was no forward assist. 16" or 20" Thanks Roger any other info would also be helpfull Pic's if available |
All SP1's had triangular handguards. They didn't start getting forward assists until sometime after 1985 or so when the AR15A2 Sporter II came out. Those had round handguards. What are you wanting to do with your lower? Build it up as a correct SP1? A clone of an M16 variant? A carbine? Post pics! We love pics! |
Keep in mind that the upper reciever has a front hole larger than the current 1/4th inch. It's 8mm in diameter; so when you go looking for an upper reciever you'll need to find an early one. Keep an eye on the EE section of this site. Big hole SP1 (& SP2) uppers show up there occasionally. |

The carbine version would have short round handgaurds and a lightweight profile 16" barrel, and a black-coated aluminum 2 position collapsable stock. And of course a slick-sided large-hole upper and an A1 pistol grip. If it was a rifle, it would have had triangular handguards on a 20" lightweight profile barrel, A1 length trapdoor buttstock, birdcage flash hider, A1 pistol grip, and a large-hole slick-sided upper. If you wanted to make it look a tad older, you could go for the non-trapdoor buttstock and three-prong hider like the post higher up the page shows. The early 70s were a bit of a transitional period, so this gun might have shipped with either type of buttstock or flash hider. EDIT: from the date you posted, this one was probably a 20" rifle. I don't think they sold any 16" SP1s that early. |
Thanks mentalstampede!!!!! I think I found a SP 1 upper just waiting for a reply from seller |
