I have been saving $$$ to build a retro clone for some time now. Went to the local fun store to troll for parts and there was an SP1 that had just arrived as a trade-in for an FN-PS90.

Someone's loss, my gain.

Serial # 179XXX

Here are the glamor shots:

Slab-side/slick-side, triangle handguard goodness.

Barrel marked "C MP CHROME BORE"

Prancing Pony and straight handguard retainer ring.

"C" marked bolt carrier. Not chrome. Don't know if it's original. Next pic explains why.

Forward assist cuts on the bolt carrier. Curious when you have no forward assist.

Bolt guts.

Proper 20rd. mag to boot.

Gotta check headspace on it and if it all works out, it's off to the range...

Your BCG is right, only the earliest SP1's received a slickside BC. Then Colt started putting the serrated BCs in all rifles to make everything standardized.

BTW, nice looking rifle. You ought to put it in Ekie's SP1 data base.

Jeep is a '72 CJ5 with an AMC 304v8.

Pig.

Gets 5 gallons to the mile. Fun on the trails (lockers, roll cage, etc., etc.) and scary looking. Useless as a BOV, since I'd be fresh outta gas in 20 minutes of driving from A to B. I'd have to tow a water buffalo full of gas behind it just to escape the area.

My goal is to paint it up like a Vietnam-era F-4 Phantom, since it is a brick that drives, is loud as hell, stinky, and I wouldn't trade it or feel better for any new-fangled model anywhere. The double-ugly and this vehicle are kindred spirits.

Here's a pic:

Oh man, I think we should start comparing notes. This past winter I purchased a Jeep bought a snow plow with the remnants of a '78 Jeep attached to it. I'm planning on getting a new steel body and just painting it O.D. green and having fun with it. I wish I could get a military type canvas top like yours to go on this newer Jeep.

Doc,

Looks good. If rust doesn't make up 70% of your CJ, then it ain't a real Jeep.

Check out www.beachwoodcanvas.com or www.odcloth.com.

they make all the OD canvas tops for military vehicles of all shapes and sizes.

Summer and Winter tops for M38A1s will fit a CJ5 like a glove.

Best bet on the steel body is Willys Overland Motors.

They import steel tubs from the Phillippines like everyone else, with one big distinction. They bought all the blueprints from Willys after they went belly up. They get all the holes drilled in the right places so you can drop your tub right on and bolt it in. You will save hours of agony and frustration for the little extra you pay for their stuff.

Good luck with it!

Getting this thread out of hijack mode:

SP1 and GAU5a clone photoshopped to look like a slide from 1960.

The guns I took out for our Memorial Day shoot. All are original and as issued.

1911A1 manufactured by Remington Rand

1903A3 manufactured by Remington

M1 Garand manufactured by Harrington & Richardson

M1 Carbine manufactured by Inland

SP1 manufactured by Colt

I can't even begin to describe how much fun I had shooting with my friends today.

I have a 1956 CJ5 (2nd year they were produced and still has Willys on the tailgate) with the F head 4 cylinder engine and manual operated wiper on the passenger side. Mileage is not much better at about 10 mpg and in my opinion the 5 gallon jerry can is not an option, it is a neccesity with only the small under seat fuel tank.

It is in the process of it's second restoration (the first was about 15 years ago) and after reparing the rust damage, I planned to paint it in the stock red/orange Jeep color, but I really like your camo scheme and a flat finish would make the body work on the mostly flat jeep panels a lot less demanding than a gloss finish.  Any chance of getting you to e-mail me shots of all four sides as well as the interior?
