Ok, I have an upper, much lighter gray than the modern A1 I photo-ed it with (the upper in question is the TOP one. What appears to be the old style ejection port cover, numbered sight wheel, arrow by that, no forward assist.
I am wondering, if this is not a 601 upper, then what did it come on originally?  It didnt come from a GM hydramatic I assume, as they all had forward assists didnt they?
The seller told me it was Air Force surplus?

USAF Model 604.

ETA: Although it could've come on a GAU5A. Never know.

I've got several just like this.  A couple have been "refinished" with a black krinkle finish and have the recessed front pin hole.

If I understand correctly, all "early" A1's were mfg by Colt (i.e. have NO forging marks...CA, CH, etc. by rear site) and have the small forging marks in front of the port door.

Check the "sticky" for models, years, etc...that should answer all of your questions.
