I understand that Cheaper than Dirt still has some A1 type barrelled uppers, and they also seem to appear regularly in the EE section of this site.

Re the buttstock/tube assy, if you'll e mail me, I may be able to help out there.

I just checked CTD and they have no more, nor are they getting anymore

CDNN had some USGI Colt m-16 uppers that shot very well.
Don't know if they are still available or not.

Search the board...there've been some very good "SP-1/M-16 A1" parts vendors selling decent products.
You may have to buy multiple parts from different vendors to get the exact quality of furniture you're looking for....it's all part of the fun and you'll need spares anyways!

Sarco had in ad in Shotgun News
in which they had A1 Uppers.

A1 buttstocks use a standard rifle buffer tube, but they do require a shorter butt screw. Check out this one on gb. He's an honest seller and he usually keeps a couple listed.

The guy on gb, "dornot" is a great seller and I recomend him as well. He has had some uppers under $200.00. keep an eye out you will get a good deal.

I bought my old-school furniture from Northridge International  They have both the original solid rubber buttplate style & the later A1 trapdoor.
Gun Parts Corp has A1 furniture also.

As far as uppers go....if Sarco/CDNN/CTD, etc are sold out you're stuck with getting one from the EE or using a C7 (A1 with shell deflector).  Fulton Armory does have slicksided M16 style uppers.

Who makes the C7s with an appropriate barrell profile? Im not setup to assemble an upper

ETA Bushmaster makes C7 type uppers and I found complete barrell assemblies w/handguards for a fair price, so Im making headway

You're going to have better luck finding a barreled A1 upper on gb (I posted a link to it) or the EE, than finding one attached to a C7 upper.

Dude, just haunt the EE. I just picked up a Colt SP1 barreled upper for $215, which isn't bad. There are a couple of people with old school M16 furniture, although my build is going to have the trapdoor buttstock so I'm going with Northridge for that......hey, the set of handguards, buttstock and pistol grip is $20..How can you go wrong with that?
Incidentally, someone here was calling the A1's built on A2 lowers the A1+. I sort of like that name. It eliminates the weight adding (and probably unnecessary, unless you be left handed) case deflector and the beefier rear sight. It also eliminates the thickening of the barrel in front of the sight, which was put there to keep GI's from bending the barrel when using it as a prybar. It does away with those round handguards. With old school furniture you get the shorter stock and the no finger bump pistol grip too. Heck, I'm not even going to have a forward assist! This will be the AR15 stripped down to it's lightest I'm willing to go. Need the long barrel; the 5.56 kills with velocity (oh, i'm getting the 1 in 12 twist, so it's 55 grain ammo all the way for me).

Essential arms has buffer tubes for $12 and the short A1 screw for $1!

Ok this is lookin more feasible, even if I have to use a C7 upper

The M16A1 stock (with cleaning kit compartment) is usually found at gun shows and quite often includes the buffer, tube, screw and spring. The M16 stock without the compartment is becoming collectable and may be a little more. I have an M16A1 stock to sell myself but just haven't put it on ebay yet.

You don't see to many A1 trap door stocks around here. If they are complete, they are most likely A2 stocks. A1 non traps are not hard to find these days and fortunately that's keeping the price down.

Are they the same as an SP1 stock, or is there something different about them?

I got an complete upper from CDNN and it came with an A1 stock with trapdoor.   Everything was in NIB condition.

My SP1 stock has the trapdoor but the rear swivel is similar to the rigid ones found on an A2, not like the ones on the early M16 stocks. I was trying to determine whether the M16 stocks with the trapdoor are like my SP1 stock or if they have the early type swivel.

Early SP1 stocks are the same as the early M16.  Late SP1 stocks with the trapdoor are the same as the M16 with the trapdoor.

'I was trying to determine whether the M16 stocks with the trapdoor are like my SP1 stock or if they have the early type swivel.'

It wouldn't be an M16 stock if it had the compartment ('trapdoor'). It would be an M16A1 stock, and it would have the rigid sling loop. Maybe I read something into some posts that wasn't there, but it was like one post was saying the 'trapdoor' stocks were A2. Not necessarily so. A2 stocks have the kit compartment, but they're longer than the A1. The A1 stock makes a nice stock for a carbine or any other AR, particularly if you need a shorter 'pull' or just want a shorter weapon.
