Modifying an A2 lower to an A1 is a lot harder than it looks.. and I may have bitten off a little more than I can chew.  Having a hard time keeping the lines strait and finishing up... will be running out of metal here shortly so I better figure it out here pretty quick! ...

Here's a few pics of my progress so far:

Still need to square up the front pivot lugs and that shouldn't be a problem.  The person that was going to weld up the safe/semi markings backed out so now not sure what I'll do on that... don't really want to go the J-B weld route as I would like to keep the anodizing option open.

Looks really good to me. All I see that needs work is what you said, the front pivot pin lugs.

Projects like this always look terrible before the finish is applied. You'd be amazed at the difference when you get it anodized. It will be much more difficult to tell that certain lines aren't perfect. Just glancing at it I think it looks pretty good!

looks like you are doing a very good job on it.  seems like the global receivers lend themselves good to the conversion since the takedown pin boss shape.  i have not tackled one yet though.  i see on there site there available marked auto also.  im going to look into that if they will let me.

They're out of stock for about 25 more days though. I'm thinking of going with a GTS lower as well, for my XM177E2. Would make it even better if i could get it Auto marked.

If possible, use some material to back up your filing, sort of a make shift guide.

When I modified my sons lower I used a large steel washer as a guide to help file the desired shape. With a steel guide in place you can’t go too deep when filing.

Your lines look real good. Looks like you may want to use f ile though, power tools take too mauch too quickly.

I really would'nt worry about having to use the JB weld option. More than likely the anodizing over the welds will look like crap anyway. More than likely you will have to use Norrels to achive a nice even finsih over weld, so JB away.

Very nice work; that took a fair amount of balls just to try it, and you've done a GREAT job.

Do you intend to alter the mag release fence as well?

I think I might just do only the fence and the excess logo/lettering on my DPMS lower.

(got if for $98)

I am not going to re-anodize/park mine, I just plan to use some Duracoat "colt grey" on as many of the parts as I can.

Then, touch up the furniture with "flat black".

Still debating...

Looks good to me.

I don't have the guts to try it with my AR's.

I don't havbe neither the intestinal fortitude nor the patience to do that level of work; you sir, are an artisan. Good Job.

i learned a trick a few years ago for not rounding edges while fileing.  an old gunsmith told me to get a draw file from brownells and use soap stone to "lube" the teeth.  with a draw file you pull it towards you, and it keeps the edged nice and crisp.

could be just the angle of the pic, but i mentioned this because where the buffer tube screws in looks slightly high in the center.  please don't take this as criticism.  it is a very good job.

i have been contemplating doing one my self for my 605 build.

Thanks for the compliments folks.  It was fun, but had myself worried a few times.
Hopefully the next one will go a little smoother AND faster..

Are you using the rifle gas sys? Let me know how it runs when finished.

i actually decided to cheat a little.

i'm going to use an m261 22lr kit and make my 605 a dedicated 22lr.  with the extra 3/4" due to the chamber farther back i can put the FH right up to the FSB and still be 16".  also, no gas issues beacause it is blowback.  the mag inserts go into the stock mags, so you won't know the difference until i pull the trigger.
