http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a313/muddspuffin/DSC00046.jpg Question I have on my rifle pictured above. Should I shoot it? I'm new to the AR world and don't know that much. I'd hate to go put rounds through it and find out later it's something rare or anything like that. Some info: the lower is an Olympic, serial number range of Z23-- (which if I remember right, I read on their site is circa '84-'85), the barrel is stamped C MP Chrome Lined Bore, w/out a twist rate. The upper is marked L M, which I believe is an Army Spare built by, I forget who, but under govt contract. Also has a chrome bolt & carrier assy. Other than that, nothing special that can't be found on cheaper than dirt with ease. I'm probably gonna go put some rounds through it tomorrow after I have the headspacing checked out, but I'd like to know before I "ruin" it. Thanks in advance. |

Welcome to the forum. That is a great looking rifle; I don’t believe you’re going to hurt the value at all by shooting it. In fact, I would think it wrong to not be out shooting it and enjoying in. Question for ya. The barrel looks to be the 14.5-inch flavor, if so, is it SBRed or have a permanently attached flash hider of some kind to bring it to 16-inches? |

Good looking rifle. I hate bringing this up, but I'll just pass this info. on and let you decide what to do with it. Usually when a perm. A1 or A2 FH is attached to a barrel, the barrel is 14.7" to achieve the desired OAL of 16". If this barrel started life as a 14.5", it may still not be long enough. Sorry for having to get legalistic, just wasn't sure if you where aware of the above info. I almost ended-up building a rifle that was cut 1/2" too short. Let me know if you need to know the proper way to measure. |

Actually, yes I would like to know the proper way to measure. I'm not sure that it'll matter down the road, as I'm considering going the NFA stamp route and making it full auto, once I figure out how to legally do that. But yes, I would like to know. I also would like to know what is the easiest/cheapest route for doing all the paperwork/legal stuff for a Class III. The mechanical rifle side is easy, I just need to know what I need and how to go about doing the other side. |
You can't legally make it full auto. Elvis |

With the bolt closed, stick a cleaning rod down the bore. Mark the rod at the end of the FH (I used a marker). Measure the rod from end to mark. Needs to be over 16". Check the NFA / Class 3 for your other questions. |
