I have a metal stock on my AR Carbine, the original XM stocks were they metal/plastic when did the material change? etc. ta.

Original stocks for the XM series were aluminum and coated with vinyl-acetate. Not sure when they changed. Still had one issued on the XM177 I carried in El Salvador in 1983.

The change was made in the early 1980s, most around 1984. An exact cuttoff date can't be given because it is different for serveral models.
