Ok,

I've been through the tacked posts but I still have some questions.

For a '67-'70 era XM177 Army issue build, it appears I need a 11.5" barrel and 4.5" dissipator. A1 upper (obviously) with no deflector.

So, regarding barrel diameter, pencil/lightweight profile is correct?

Grenade ring or no?

And while I am throwing questions out, at what point did the barrel diameter increase?

TIA

PS The supplier threads seem adequate but, FWIW, I think the spec pages are becoming unwieldy  (just an observation) YMMV

Lightweight (.625" under the FSB) is the correct profile.  The diamater did not change until the early 1980's with the advent of the M16A2 and the M4.

Yes, you will need a 0.625" diameter "pencil" barrel 11.5" long with the 4.5" moderator.  You will also need the grenade ring as well.

uxb, that is exactly what I want for my next build. Details on the barrel assembly?

ya got to go a little longer on the barrel than 11.5 if using the total silence rig, and ya dont want to SBR it.

Thanks for the help, guys. Regarding the grenade ring, though, in looking through the real Nam photos, it looks like half and half - some with the ring and some w/o it. The Model 609/610 XM177 appears not to have a ring (then again it looks to be a slabside). The XM177E2 has one. I assume this just reflects overlap in issue models...?

All XM177E2 rifles had the grenade ring (AFAIK). The XM177E1 had a 10.25"(?) barrel and just the moderator, no grenade ring. I even have a pic of XM177E2's with birdcage FH's and the grenade ring. But yeah, I got a question for UXB: what's the total length for that E2? Is it around 30"?

I used the LW barrel from Bushy I got from PK Firearms.  I ordered the grenade ring from total silence & the dummy Mod. directly from BM.  Sent it all off to www.ar15barrels.com and let him deal with the overall legal length of 16" issue.  I would recommend the TS Mod instead of the bushy.  It cost more, but I think it's historically more accurate.  It has flats for the wrench.  The BM is just round.  I'm going to have mine re-done with the TS.

Now you need to find the A1 upper receiver w/out brass deflector if you don't already have it.  In my opinion, if your going to go through the trouble of building one, you might as well do it as historically accurate as you can.  This would include refinishing the receivers.

The standard XM177E1 (no grenade ring) is shorter than 16".  All this in moot if your going SBR.

JoeBud,

The barrel started as a Colt post-ban carbine barrel, chopped and threaded to 11.5" with the gas port opened to 0.085".  Grenade ring and moderator courtesy of Total Silence, Inc.

Blanco Diablo, the overall length is exactly 30" with stock retracted and 33.25" with stock extended.

How are you getting 16 inches with a 11.5" bbl?

Is the "lock-washer" from TS used with an XM177E1 retro-build or with the grenade-ring on an XM177E2 retro-build ?
.....or should it be disregarded/left off of the build ?
..........what about when using cut-down light-weight barrels ?

Regards, RichardS.

What about the split-lock-washer that TS supplies with their moderators (live or fake).....where is it used ?......or is it left off when using the "grenade-ring" ?

The split washer is not shown in the XM177E2 manual exploded diagrams, so I left it off mine.

Also, all of my carbines are SBR'ed as I have none that exceed 16" in barrel length...
