Hello. I'm looking for information about a rifle, specifically what year it was produced. Does anyone have serial number ranges for Colt SP1s for the first 5 years?

Thanks,
-Mathew

What's the number ? Put an X in place of the last digit.

PS, the list is under the "Important Articles....." sticky on the ar forum. I just want to know what number you have

It must be 1968

I was told it was the last serial number for this year making it a neat piece.

Hence why I’m looking for the exact serial number range and not just posting it with an X.

Anyone know the exact last one to be made in 68?

In good --> great shape, what would it be worth?

Thanks in advance,
-Mathew

You'd be surprised what you'll find above under the INFORMATION button......

This:

AR-15 :: Serial Number List

is just one of the good items there.

I appreciate the help and the direction pointing to the important info page.

Problem is, this rifle is between these serial numbers.

1968 SP10750
1969 SP14000

I assume this means that in 68, they started with 10750 and ended at 14000? If they ended with SP10750 and started again in 69 at SP14000, then the story might hold water as these could be guesstimates.

If this is not 100% accurate, if I called Colt, would they be able to tell me the exact numbers?

Serial is SP108XX

Would also love to know what this might be worth if in great shape (pictures to come)

The first rifle in 68 was 10750. I would assume that the last one was 13999.  If you notice in the serial number list they state the start and end numbers for both 69 and 70, years with very low production. Since they don't do this for other years you just have to assume that they used all the numbers. I just recently saw a list of the number of rifles made each year and it looked like they were numbers you would end up with if you just subtracted the start number from the finish number.

I just say an SP1 with the serial between 125 and 140 that sold for $2k. It did have some 6061 related corrosion issues.

eta: Here is a low numbered SP1 that recently sold for the  "Buy Now" price. Worth way more than something made in 68.

ETA2: It's the same seller that has #18 currently listed.

Sorry, you're right.

Worth more. Not way more. The 68 would probably actually sell for $1000 to $1200 max.  [ My observations on watching the EE, GB, AA, GA.  The market for later pattern SP1's seems to be depressed at the moment. I was surprised when the 65 sold for $1800 ].

The value breakdown would be:

"1963" worth the most [ see other thread about '63 issues ].

1964 next

1965 next

everything else.

The drilled safety's and the pinned rec ext is probably the break between "early" and "late" with another break after '77 when they changed the roll marking.

Originality also plays a big role in value. Both of my old rifles have non-original bolt carriers .  Finding the correct pattern will be nearly impossible.

Now that is interesting, we need more serial numbers from that range to see if a pattern can be figured out.

Another thing about the roll mark, it was changed on the full auto series long before it was done on the SP1.  Wierd stuff.

That is the rifle that had the windage "R" stamped from the factory. You can tell where the original R was machined down with just a slightly raised pad like the machined off pads where the selector stops originally were on the lh side of the rec.

110X was just a lower. I had all the correct parts to build a period upper except for the slightly cut back carrier. I used a parked, slickside M16 with chrome key and a chrome MP bolt.

540x had the wrong safety and a FA carrier. I put a chrome M16 slickside in it. Not correct but I don't have another parked one [ although I am trying to contact the guy that I got all these slickside carriers from ].

Got you on 110X.  It is possible that 540X came with a auto carrier, stranger things have happened.

Colt was making forward assit carriers then, so is possible.  Carriers from that time frame would have two stakes on the carrier key right next to each other, and no markings.
