What do flash cans do?  Are they better than an regular birdcage ?

They direct all of the muzzle blast forward, away from the shooter. They don't do much to mitigate flash.

They're good for short barrels, but they add about 3" to the muzzle. I would rather get a 2-3" longer barrel, then just put a flash hider on it.

Longer barrel:

Less concussion
Less flash
More velocity

They're good for any bbl w/o a suppressor.  Downside - doesn't do much @ an indoor range - noise just bounces right back @ you.

Normally yes, but there are some nice low profile linear comps out there.

BRT Linear Comp
Simple Threaded Device

If I recall they are the same dimensions/weight of an A2 flash hider.

That being said a 10.5" with a low profile linear comp feels just right.

I tried an 8.5" barrel and it was pretty obnoxious indoors.

Mostly they just look awesome under an extended rail on a short barrel. They do a decent job of controlling the blast depending on which one you use.

Awesome, I have been deciding between a Scorpion and an AR like yours. I never cared for the standard mag well lower on a 9mm, yours I like a lot. Here is mine in5.56

Nice!

I too do not care for the adapted mag well look. The 9mm is fun to shoot!

My 10.5" 5.45x39 pistol with a KAK flash can.
I just wanted the longer handguard, flash can makes it work. L-O-U-D-!

Use one on my 5.5" 9 build.

I have a flaming pig recessed into my hand guard.  People think it is a suppressor.  So cool factor.  I have an 8.5 barrel and does help with the sound and concussion.  Puts it all forward.  Very happy with mine.

Everybody should have at least one tucked deep inside a rail.

Love my KAK slim, for $25 you can't beat it.

KAK now has a "micro" flash can. Same length as an A2. I ordered one to try out.

My use for one:

I'm waiting for a suppressor to be released from NFA jail.  It will go onto an upper with a 9" 300 BO barrel and a rail long enough to protect most of the suppressor.

Until the suppressor is released, I'm running a flash can to move the muzzle blast from the 9" barrel out of the interior of the rail.

I really like the KX3 and KX5 (pictured) on the .458 SOCOM, modified of course.  This one is on a 12 inch.

I have a KX3 on a 10.5 inch and as a flash suppressor, well, flash enhancer is a more appropriate description.  As a blast diverter, they are excellent.  The MI blast diverter, modified, on my 10mm SOCOM, also does a heck of a job throwing blast away from the shooter but cannot be opened up enough for a .458.

Is there any difference in performance over the slim, micro and regular flash cans?

I have both the slim and original flash can's from KAK, and I would say they perform about the same, for what it's worth I ran the slim on a 7.5" 5.56, and the original on a 10.5" 300BLK.

Can't comment on the micro.

Thanks
I'm in the final steps of my build and was set on the standard size but if the smaller versions offer the same befits, I think I'll go for the lighter option.

I have a lot of experience with flash cans and the slimmer versions do not work quite as well. The longer and fatter the better they work. The cone like that of a KX3 works better than a hollow tube as well.

I have one of their A2 style flash hiders that has holes instead of slots. The machining looks well done and I believe it is melonited.

If you like seeing fire coming out of your barrel, then get a flash can :)
They're more geared towards builds that are less than 16".
