A month ago I bought a stripped lower at a gun show. I didn't specify weather I was building a rifle or pistol when I bought it.
Is it legal to build a pistol with it or do I need to buy another specifically for a pistol? I haven't put any parts in it yet.
Thanks

Pistol is lawful from any lower that was not first configured as rifle.

Short take: virgin lower fine, used one likely not, even though in either case assuming you did a 4473 it should have been transferred as "other firearm".

I filled out the standard form when purchasing from a dealer. Gave him my driver and cwp licence.
Don't know what he put down. Would that be the 4473 ?

Does not really matter what he put on the 4473, what matters is that it left the factory as a stripped lower.

True dat.

What an FFL correctly or incorrectly puts on 4473 is not the actual determiner of classification or legality of future config.

OK, thanks for the info. I'm going to start rounding up some parts for a .300 Blackout.
Thanks again!
