New here to AR15. I have been reading reviews and the such for awhile now and I really need some advice on which way to go.
First off, why am I building an AR pistol? I live in Virginia and I want to be able to carry it loaded in my vehicle, I also want the smallest possible gun for carrying discreetly. What is my main purpose for an AR pistol? My goal is to eventually use it at work as a patrol rifle pistol. I would imagine that I won't be engaging targets farther than 75yds at tops, more like just outside of pistol range would be best. I want it to be small enough to break down and carry to work discreetly so that people don't know I have it until I need it. The pistol needs to be able to shoot the more advanced self-defense loads such as Hornady 75gr OTM or other similar rounds. Since this will be a PDW it needs to be reliable and dependable. What's my budget? I really need to keep the pistol under $600. I have MBUS and magazines already and I will buy a red dot down the road. I just need the bare minimum at this point. Maybe down the road I will upgrade parts. What am I looking at? So far I have read a lot of reviews on Radical Firearms, but nothing too recently, I have communicated with their staff and they seem to have pretty good CS and good products as far as a entry level AR is concerned. I really wanted the 7.5" pistol but after reading reviews on 7.5" pistols/rifles, I am swaying more towards the 10.5" model. I want to eventually ad a Thordsen cheek rest instead of a sig brace. On the other hand, I was looking at PSA to buy a build kit but they only really have 7" models and I don't want to go that small. I have a PSA rifle and think its a great gun and would invest in another one if I wanted to do a shorter barrel. Unfortunately, their 10.5" models are either sold out, out of my price range, or don't offer the rails that I am currently interested in. That being said, I recently noticed their 8.5" upper with a nice keymod rail and a 1:7 twist which I think is good for a shorter barrel. I can also get their complete pistol lower and a BCG from Ares Armor and then I have a charging handle at home I can throw in it. This will end up costing the same as a complete rifle from Radical Firearms.
PSA 8.5" Upper PSA Complete Pistol Lower Ares Armor BCG Please help me decide which one of these will make me happier. I don't want to buy a 7.5 or 8.5 and then be disappointed by the ballistic/reliability/accuracy and be stuck (until I buy a new barrel). I also don't want to buy something that is junk. I also figure a complete rifle from Radical Firearms at least comes with a good warranty and they can't say that the issue is being caused by a different manufacturer's part. Also, if there are other companies to look at for upper/lowers I am interested to know. I really want to avoid building it from scratch because I am limited on budget and don't want a bunch of different low end parts thrown into a rifle. Thank you for your input, I look forward to reading your responses. Jester |
| I don't understand what problems people are having with 7.5" pistols. I built mine, upper and lower all a mix of different manufacturers, 7 years ago and it runs perfect. Carbine tube and spring, H buffer, 7.5 KittyKat barrel and gas tube with ground down A2 front sight. All I did was drill the gas port bigger(methodically). It isn't rocket science. |
