In a 7.5" 5.56 Pistol/SBR to run 100%?

Each and every pistol may be react differently to a particular buffer weight.  I'd start with a standard or H and work up till it chokes and then back off.  Ultimately you want to use the buffer that will work for each and every type of ammo you shoot.

H works in almost everything.  I normally start there and only change if I run into problems.

What do you think about the Spikes ST-T3.  Bit heavier than an H but that way I could remove one of the tungsten weights to find what works

[#4]
That will work, but make sure you have some standard weights to substitute for any tungsten weights you remove.

Can it not run with just 2 tungsten weights?

It probably would, but that would leave a lot of space for the buffers to free float in.  My recommendation would be to use a standard buffer along with the H3 and then you can build whatever combination of weights you want from the two buffers.  Std buffers are usually about $10, so its not a lot of extra money.

ok got it.  I have a few standard weights from a buffer I took apart awhile back.

What quality H3 do you guys use?  Amazon has one for $5 and a UTG for $27.

I have a PSA H3 buffer.  I'm not a huge UTG fan, though its probably ok.  I wouldn't trust the $5 amazon model - I doubt it has any tungsten in it.

Spikes would be a good one - or any other name brand should be fine.

Very short barrels and gas systems are much more "touchy" to changes in operation than longer.  Significantly changing buffer weights makes a difference, you may have to try a variety of buffers to get a working system.

Make sure you get real buffering buffers with the multiple sliding weights, as the buffering action is more critical with higher energy/higher cyclic rate as is common with these kind of configurations.

the 5 dollar amazon one is solid and has no play in it. says made in china though , nice solid weight

going to try it out in the next week or so

How does the Hive feel about Wolff extra-power carbine springs?  Useful or the source of failures?

I run them in my 9mm AR and my 3gun setup with no issues.

That is also what I plan to run in the 7.5" as well.

Phase5 just came out with a tuned spring rated pistol buffer spring.
I was reading it on instgram...at first I thought it was just another spring with gay spray paint on it....but here is what the had to say about it.

wow you guys are a tough crowd! In the past few years we have messed with springs from different companies but few have been just right. Usually the high power springs were too stiff; so we spoke with a 112 year old spring company to help us with our specific pistol needs. From the exact number of coils to the material choice the spring has just enough extra power by percentage% than a mil spec spring that helps the pistol cycle better for us with standard carbine buffers. No (heavy) buffer needed. We are just trying to share our findings with people who are building guns. We try to provide value when we can

Coil count, spring rates and heat treats are real engineering fyi. Sounds like they did some research.

My setup  7.5" barrel (gas port hole size .075, pistol gas tube,m16 carrier, Pistol buffer tube which utilized standard carbine spring and I use a H2 carbine buffer.
This was my starting setup and ran like a champ no changes.

My phase 5 buffer and spring worked 100%.

Spikes pistol kit (ST-T2) wouldn't always lock back on empty. Had a few issues.

However tho.. the barrel gas post size does matter and differ from barrel manufactures.

I have a 9mm buffer in mine because I swap uppers, 9mm, 5.56, 6.8.

It works with all of them except when shooting a 7" 5.56 upper using weak ammo like Herter's.

So an H or H2 buffer would probably be fine with everything.

I needed an H2 buffer to get mine just right.  Other parts included Phase 5 buffer, m16 bcg, BCM extractor and a flaming pig. This setup and a carbine buffer was damaging the brass during extraction.
