Does anyone know if this qualifies as a vertical grip? It is not designed to be held like a grip and in reality is to small to be held even if that was the design. My thought is its legal on a pistol and looks to be very helpful to help index the hand in the right place on the short rails of a pistol, so as to help prevent blowing your fingers off without using a mag well hold(which I do not like) and breaking the law.

I want to be 100% legal with NO wiggle room or room for interpretation by the .gov or local pd. Thus the question.

On a side note I just joined the club. I just got my upper from spikes and will post pics of my new toy soon.

A hand stop is fine.  Just no vertical grips.

I am sure its been asked but what about the magpul afg?  Is there a ruling on that?

No official ruling.  Rumor has it Magpul has written a letter to the ATF.  I don't know how true that is.  My pistol is already front heavy enough.  I have no desire to add more weight to the front of the gun.

I asked the same question a few months ago.  The concensus was that it would probably be illegal.

Also, $43.00 for hand stop?  That's ridiculous!

While I agree the price is rediculous and there are other options, the question remains. Is/are these definately legal? Or is this a grey area, in which case I will stay away.

I don't see the gray area.  If it is designed as a grip it is illegal unless AOWed or SBRed.  If it is designed as a stop it is legal.  A bipod is legal, a grip pod is not.  A hand stop is legal, a forward grip not parallel to the bore is not.  What is the Mag-Pul AFG designed to be used as?  A grip.  Illegal.  No gray area so far as I can tell.

Legal pistol:

Illegal pistol (legal AOW, SBR, MG)

Ergo Hand Stop  $10

Likely going to be frowned upon as it seems to drop quite a bit below the rail and could be gripped pretty easily.  I wouldn't use it.
