I understand the vert grip on a pistol is a no-go.  OK, got it.

What about the following "grips" or sling positions?  Anyone have experience with these ideas?  You could use this like a vert/forward grip...

Any BATFE concerns?  I guess you could argue the sling one pretty easy, but what about the first one directly below?

Thanks to ILIKELEGS...I stole your photo!  That is one cool AR!

Or how about using the sling?  You could definitely grab onto the front sling/clip and geta vert grip-like hold on the pistol.

Thanks to PHAM for the photo...hope you don't mind....

How do you get the black frame around your posted pic like this first one?  Looks much cleaner and somehow easier to look at....

According to BATFE, adding a vertical grip to a pistol makes it a two-handed weapon, without a buttstock, which means it is classified as an "Any Other Weapon" (AOW) under the NFA.

The "grips" you mention accomplish the same purpose (making a pistol into a two-handed weapon) so I wouldn't chance it without AOW registration.  After all, if you're wrong, at best BATFE will consider your weapon contraband, seize it, and destroy it.  At worst, they'll prosecute you for an illegal NFA weapon and you'll be facing the 10 year/$250,000 fine deal.
