| What manufactures will provide the letters for pistol builds or are they really needed |
|
A letter is helpful but not really needed. Just document that you bought a stripped lower. If you buy some companies lowers that are sold as stripped they come with a special serial number. DPMS uses the letter "K" after the normal serial number to indicate that it was sold as a stripped lower. I have several of their lowers in different calibers and all of them have the "K" after the number. I was told by my dealer who is was a major DPMS distributor at the time, Kiesler's, that the "K" meant the lower was sold as stripped. If that is not good enough for the Feds I don't know what is. Even without a special serial number just have it noted on the 4473 in the description area that it is a stripped lower. |
Stag used to, I went to order one a few weeks ago and was told they no longer sell "pistol" lowers with the paperwork. I ended up ordering a RRA Striped Pistol lower instead. I guess all my Lowers don't have to be Stag and Colt. Be nice to add some variety. |
| Stag still does I just bought one last week. How many do you want? It is called a certificate of unassembly it is a $20.00 option. You don't have to have it but it wouldn't hurt. Just like the receiver doesn't need to have pistol marked on it. There are alot leo's out there that don't know the laws and that includes FFL's also. It just makes life better for you. Most of companies log their stripped lowers in as long guns. They have made it quit clear to me that do do not have pistol lowers that they are long guns. That goes for AK lowers to that I have tried to buy. They do that because they don't make their own lowers so they want to cover their butts. Stag makes their own so they offer the certificate. So when I build my pistols for myself or to sell I buy Stag even though they have the dear on them. |

Hmmm, That contradicts what stag told me when I called to order mine. Said they no longer sell pistol lowers, or the certificates. It was not in their 2007 catalog and I did not find it on the website either. In fact, Jesse at Stag was the one that told me to buy one from Rock River arms. |

I bought a noveske and a mega stripped lower, had the sender and my ffl log both as pistol receivers, and I'm covered. I haven't decided yet whether I'll get em engraved "pistol only" I know that it can't hurt and could potentially save you a bit of trouble down the line if you run across some unknowing leo's. I don't see it ever being a problem, but if they want to chase it down they're welcome to, and as far back as they can go it's listed as a pistol. g |

I just emailed Stag about the certificates of unassembly this is what Paul told me---- "The certificate of non-assembly is still available to dealers. It only states that the lower receiver left our facility as an unassembled lower, and Jesse probably told the customer to look for a lower that is specifically a pistol lower. Let me know if you need anything else. Paul" I knew that they were available to dealers only, that is why I can get them. If someone wants one let me know. http://bentbarrel.com/PIC%20PISTOL%20LOWER.JPG |

Hmmm, that is strange. Not sure why I could not get one ordered. I was in the gun shop as they ordered 4 complete rifles for police dept purchase and then asked to order my pistol striped lower. Told they no longer do that and to contact RRA. I suppose I could have had a Stag afterall. |
Would it be possible to get them to do that BEFORE you assemble a stripped lower into a pistol. I recently purchased two stripped lowers that I would like to build pistols with but the company whose logo etc is stamped on the side is not being very cooperative regarding authenticity documentation. I'm torn between contacting the ATF or just pawning these two receivers and buying two deer head lowers. |

When you bought them if they were not registered as pistols you cant change them to pistols now you would have to start over with new lowers and have them entered into the log books as pistols.I had originally bought 2 lowers with the intention of making one a pistol and when i picked them up i forgot to tell the shop to log 1 as a pistol so I sold the one and bought another this weekend and made it a stag so I would be able to get paperwork from them for it. |
