I may could get the 108’s to cycle if I adjusted the gas, but it’s tuned to be extremely soft shooting with the Hornady black 105’s and match 108’s. The gas set low and the brake I currently run allows me to get off 3 shots on steel at 575yds before you hear the first impact. |

Hornady got back to me, and they say they do not sell the 105 grain FMJ bullet as a component. However, I suspect that these bullets are the same ones: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1029288755?pid=578005 A dug around, and I couldn't find a 105 grain 6mm FMJ bullet made by anyone, or loaded ammo, other than the Frontier load. My buddy who is the serious highpower competitor says he has been experimenting for a few years with the ELD bullets, mostly the 6.5 147 grain ELD. He says that in his experience, they "like" more of a jump than most factory ammo is loaded at. A lot of factory ammo is loaded to just barely fit into the magazines, giving them only .020 or .030 jump to the rifling. He says .050 is the sweet spot for the Hornady ELD bullets he's messed around with. If I recall correctly, he just used this 6.5 Creedmoor rifle, loaded this way (.050 jump with a 147 grain ELD), to clean up in the Match Rifle division of the CMP Eastern Games. I scoured the internet, and found this super nerdy article, where they come to similar conclusions: https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/04/05/bullet-jump-load-development-data/ So I guess it's way too early to give up on the Hornady ELD bullets, just on Hornady's loaded ammo. Perhaps that will be my winter reloading project. In the mean time, I bought a few hundred rounds of the Frontier load to bang around with and generate empty brass. |

I’ve noticed in the reloading data that it gets the best velocity with many bullets. I’ve loaded it with .223 73 grain ELDs and it was close in accuracy to the Varget loads out of my Savage Model 12. CFE and Lever are two of the best powders for speed, but are less temp stable than Varget. Lever will push a 107 to 2650-2700 out of an 18” if I recall. |

If I'm ever throwing charges, CFE is probably the way to go because it meters so well, but for accurate loads, I'll be weighing charges. Then it doesn't really matter. Too bad the Varget loads are 100 fps slower. |

Here is a picture of the Hornady/Frontier 105 grain FMJ ballistic info from the box I found on Target Sports USA. Using the Hornady Ballistic calculator I found a match using .475 BC with a 6 mm bullet 105 grains at 2700 FPS. I’d start with .475 BC which you can fine tune once you get your bullets reloaded.  |

Another round from another box (different lot) chronographed at 2589. |

It put five rounds into about one inch at one hundred yards. It didn’t seem to shoot the 80 grain V-Match load as well—perhaps 2 MOA. The Frontier 105 seems promising, but I want to shoot it from a better rest. These were literally the first 21 rounds down the barrel. I’m pleased enough I’m going to order a .223/5.56 barrel when they get back in stock. |
