Does anyone make a piston kit for an AR-10?  I want to build my own AR-10 using Aero upper/lower, a high(er) end 6.5 Creed or 260 barrel, and I'd like it to be piston driven because I'd like it to be different from the other guns in my safe and I like the idea for suppressed shooting, especially if I can find one with a quick adjust setting on the block.

Yeah yeah yeah, I know all the arguments about Piston vs DI and I accept the common consensus that piston is not really needed over DI, but this is American and I can do what I want and I want a nice clean heavy piston system so please don't trash this thread with that debate.  It's already been beaten to death.  I know what I'm getting myself into (mostly)

Pof, sig716 or Lwrc bolt carrier would be the heart of the build. Might be necessary to mill clearances into the upper. From there it might be possible to adapt a piston kit.

There are two other .308 types of piston which could inspire your build. The pws long stroke or the Adam Arms with its g2 sized receiver set.

Other options are watch for sales. Rainer Arms once sold complete POF uppers, or the equipment exchange.

There have been home built piston systems featured on this site.

Especially in 6.5 CM or .260 Rem, you will have early unlocking issues to deal with since carrier movement is instantaneous with a piston system.

You would need a bolt carrier with an elongated cam path, which is going to accelerate your cyclic rate and increase carrier velocity substantially.  You will have to tame that with heavier spring rate and buffer weight.

Return stroke of the cycle will beat the hell out of your breech and barrel extension, even more than a standard AR10 does, which is one of the harshest actions in that regard.

You would really need good engineering to design the system around the cartridge before going down this route, of which there are no current components to support the build you're talkig about.

I was initially surprised by the length of the gas system of the SCAR H. It seems short. I have shot too few rounds through one to have informed opinion. Thus far, I don't like it quite enough to have overcome the price.

LRRPF52, I realize that you are pointing out how the reduced diameter of the 6.5 calibers results in decreased volume in the barrel and thus has a significant increase in the amount of gas diverted at the point of the gas block.  Thus a rifle length gas system, or longer, on a scar?

Chrazy-Chris I mention the SCAR because it was designed for a piston from the start. There is an aftermarket developing. Considering the ease of barrel change I am surprised that .338 Federal and 6.5 calibers are not already offered. I can also imagine a suppressed .358 win build.  EDITED to add: Once again, not all the parts are available off the shelf.

Evidently both FN and Handl are both working on 6.5 calibers now, Handl addresses gas system length. In addition has both on their web site, if you try to order it states coming soon.

Good considerations that I admittedly was not tracking on that thoroughly before.  I guess this is why there isn't an AR-10 conversion kit from Adams Arms or the other piston conversion companies.  Looks like I either get to settle for a 7.62 or go back to DI.  The 260 OBR sure would be nice.

PWS offers a 6.5 creedmoor with 20" barrel and adjustable gas block. Documentation for the gas block includes suppressor use. Listed as in stock on the website.

At least I have used a scar. I have ZERO experience with Primary Weapons Systems.
