I am considering a DPMS  AR-10, LR-308 gen1 with 24inch bull barrel for benchrest shooting.  In 2014, DPMS changed to the gen2 and all of the parts are not interchangeable between the two generations. --- DPMS has physically changed the dimensions and the alloys in the upper and lower receivers as well as the bolt and extractor   to make the gun lighter and closer resemble an AR-15.     Does anyone have any "hard facts" related to buying one generation over another(relative to target shooting and performance) as well as parts availability in the future

Thank: Mike

There is more industry support for the LR308 pattern rifles. Go for it. G2 is completely new with mixed review. Id get an armalite before a g2.

I own a 16" lr308.
Extremely accurate.

Extremely overgassed.

Out of the box too overgassed to depend on for any type of reliability or longevity. Literally was beating itself apart. With an h3 buffer, rifle spring, vltor a5 tube it's not so bad. Now it's fun, but still wouldn't bet my life on it.

DPMS added the G2 line addition to their existing LR308 line. The LR patterns are most likely going anyway anytime soon.

You may have more success in the AR Variants Forum.

I have a 24" Bull G2.  Its decently balanced even with the heavy barrel.  The feel is outstanding if you already have AR15's.  Usage is almost identical.  It really feels like an AR15 with a bigger magazine.  Has a few nice upgrades like beveled magwell, grip slots cut in the front magwell, build in expanded trigger guard, titanium firing pin, completely new BCG, etc.

Parts compatibility, is kinda being overblown.  I have already changed my trigger, stock, charging handle latch, grip, with AR15 parts.  Basically, the parts that arent AR10 compatible are mostly AR15 compatible.  In a way, this gives the G2 MORE options than the G1.  The real unique parts are the bolt, charging handle, and the main issue is the unique barrel nut.  So far, just Midwest Industries, Seekins and SLR Rifleworks have handguards.  But its not like those are bad options.  Plus, anything that bolts to a GI nut can be used.  Vertex even makes a titanium MI barrel nut.  I would like to see BCM make a charging handle eventually, but the extended latch I installed is working fine.

The buffer system is a hybrid, AR15 length receiver extension with shorter AR10 buffers, or AR10 length receiver extensions with standard AR15 buffers.  I prefer the rifle length extension with AR10 buffer, or Vltor A5 extension with AR15 Carbine buffer.

The real issue right now is unique spare parts.  I'd love an extractor, some springs, a firing pin. But DPMS is currently the only manufacturer and they are using all parts to push out as many of these as they can.  There seems to be some mild upswing in buying right now for some reason.  Eventually the market will respond to fit the demand, or it will slack off.

I strongly suggest you get to a gun store and handle both.  BTW mine is newer and it seems DPMS fixed the few issues they had when initially released in 2014.  But you know how this industry is.  There are people out there still saying 'tupperware guns' are unproven vs 1911's...

Basically the parts that get changed out the most are compatible. As the other poster commented the compatibility thing is exaggerated in its importance. I changed out my G2 trigger for a LaRue and love it. Its the only change I've made.

I'd buy a G2 in a heart beat if I could find one in NorCal. Seems everyone is out of anything 308 DPMS and they say not getting any more any time soon... We need to buy before the end of year because of the new law.

Thats because IIRC the 'Panther Arms' are specifically called out in the new law, and the DPMS G2 is unfortunately a Panther.  Your best bet is going to be ordering online, or having a nearby state transfer one.

HOWEVER, you may still be able to get the Remington version later.
