| So I'm fairly new to the AR scene. I had a custom build AR15 built from Great Lakes Tactical and love it. I'm looking to possibly build a .308 rifle 16-20in barrel but have little knowledge on what components work best with each other and best bang for the buck. Obviously I don't want to cheap out but I don't want to waste money either. I've heard a lot of good things about Faxon barrels along with A5 uppers. I suppose it's a bit overwhelming starting out and I know this is the best place to ask for advice especially when planning a build. What do people recommend for a part list? |

One thing i learned the hard way, get the 308 Heavy buffer with Spring from HeavyBuffers.com. Its a little more money but sooo worth it. Made my 308 build 100% reliable and took away a LOT of recoil. I think it was 115.00 bucks for buffer and spring but I highly recommend to anyone building a 308 AR. Shipping was super fast too. I have no connection to the company selling these just a skeptic turned believer. |

I built my AR10 based on the Armalite AR10B upper and lower receivers. AR10A and DPMS pattern parts are not compatible, nor are the magazines. In the AR10B you have to use Armalite mags (often hard to come by, or modify M14 mags or Metric FNAL mags, modified). What ever barrel you decide on you must use the bolt from the same company you bought the barrel from. I was told I could not use a DPMS pattern barrel with an Armalite bolt, or vice versa. But I find I can use a DPMS patten barrel, which I did, I'm my Armalite upper as long as I also used the DPMS pattern bolt, which I did and it head spaced correctly. Also, if you use a DPMS pattern barrel in an Armalite receiver you'll need to use a standard AR15 or DPMS 308 pattern gas block and gas tube. The Armalite AR10 gas tube is a bit longer. Same with the Armalite buffer tube, it is a bit longer and a Magpul rifle length buttstock will not fit flush to the receiver. Use a standard AR15 or DPMS pattern buffer tube if you want to go with a Magpul rifle stock.
I went with a Ballistic Advantage 20" medium weight DPMS pattern barrel and bolt. They work fine and BA makes a very nice barrel for the price (watch for their weekly barrel specials). Hand guard wise, I went with the Gator Grip free float from Apex hand guards http://www.apexhandguard.com. They are a bit on the expensive side but arguably the finest hand guard I have found to date. Very light and beautifully made. I also went for the Armalite "Precision Two Stage Trigger" one of the best triggers I have ever used, and I've been building AR's since 1989 and shooting them competitively in NRA High Power matches all the way out to 1000 yards with excellent success. As most know, an excellent trigger is required for those purposes. Likely your best bet is to build a DPMS patter 308 based rifle. Parts are easily found and there is some commonality between them, but that is not a for sure thing. The problem is, their is no mil-spec for the AR10, hence variants so you sort of walk through a jungle trying to figure out what works with what brand. Perhaps if you stick with a single brand, like the Faxon you mentioned, your build will go easier than mine did. I chose Armalite for my own reasons. I hope that helps. Don |

Combine that with an adjustable gas block, and you should be swell. |

If you use a VLTOR A5 buffer tube, you can use standard carbine buffers, including H, H2, H3, etc. No real need for the specialized expensive heavy buffers. Couple that with a good adjustable gas block and you'll be good to go. I use SLR Rifleworks adjustable gas block on my 308 and an H2 buffer with standard Armalite 308 carbine spring in the A5 receiver extension. |
