Hey guys, i am new to the AK game so was curious your opinions.  Do you guys like the CMMG Mutant AK platforms?  A buddy is selling me his for cheap so couldn't pass up but i always wanted the original style i guess...  but, can't pass up the price...

Also, what ammo do the do well with being in an ar15 platform?  Thanks in advance

This is one of the AK forums not for AR-15.

There's one thing about the MK47 that many do not like, and that's the lack of a bolt hold-open. Because it's basically an AR, with the AR-type (but a little different) charging handle, this means you will have to use the charging handle every time you change magazines instead of just hitting a bolt release. The AR-type charging handle was not intended to endure this kind of use. Other than that, it is a wonderful platform for shooting 7.62X39 out of AK magazines while enjoying the benefits of the AR15 platform. If I had a chance to get one for say, $500, I would. I was interested in one but bought a SIG 556R instead, then turned around and sold it because it was so front-heavy and the stock was made so that you need a cheek piece/riser even if you use a scope with built-in mount. That one also does not have a hold-open that is activated by an empty mag. At that point I gave up on finding a modern carbine to shoot 7.62X39 that I could live with. I had one true AK left and I just concentrate on that and my ARs.

ETA: it's not really an 'AR platform' - it was built from the ground up to accommodate the 7.62X39 round; heavy-duty bolt and carrier, longer receivers and it takes AK mags. So, there is no requirement for any 'special ammo' - any 7.62X39 will work, but I would not use any corrosive ammo in a Direct Impingement gun.

The majority of complains is the charging handle is too small for what you need it to do.
Also recoil spring is stronger so charging a rifle with the small handle is hard.

Btw to the complainers. If you want an ak with a bolt hold open get a czech vz58.
Basically if you want a bho you cannot use ak mags. The vz58 mags are built for
A hold open. Maybe an ar which takes vz mags would be cool.

The other option is UniMag:

Thanks for the info...  i have been wanting an ak for a while but this came up with a bumpstock, 4 magpul mags and a case and 100 rds...  didnt figure i could get hurt so buying anyhow...  if i dont like it, i can always trade for a real ak i guess....

So comparing to an AK, i understand the platform is different but how does this shoot comparatively?  Are they typically pretty accurate?

if you're going to make the ultimate AK / AR hybrid, why in god's name would you keep the location of the AR charging handle? This thing is begging for a non-reciprocating weak side CH. Take the non-recip aspect of the AR CH and combine it with side charging from the AK...but then put it on the side that actually makes sense (or make it ambi, whatever).

Generally speaking, mine is about 2x as accurate as my AK is, although partly that's because the sights on an AK just suck.

And understand that except for the caliber and mags, there is 0% AK in the rest of the rifle, it's straight up AR.

It's more accurate, it recoils less. Or rather, it feels like it recoils less. It was lighter than my AK, too. Not so much now that it has a SOPMOD stock, Aimpoint Pro, and other junk on there, but even though now it weighs about the same as my AK does (with ironsights only on the AK), it's much better balanced and not nose-heavy.

The only downside to it is that mine will not reliably feed from Yugo-pattern BHO AK mags at all, but since those make up such a minority of AK mags I don't consider it a huge issue. My regular Euro pattern mags work fine, the Magpul mags work fine, even the Tapco mag works fine with it.
