Going to purchase a tactical in 308, just because. Uses, paper punching and maybe hunting down the road. Have narrowed it to Rock River LAR8 x1, DPMS G2 Recon and Armalite AR10 Tac16. The only one that I have actually held is the DPMS. Can you give me the pros and cons of each or a different suggestion? Could also use help locating a central Indiana shop that has inventory of any. Thanks.

I have/had a DPMS Recon Gen1.  Sold as it was heavy and want lighter recoil.  I can tell you that it functioned flawlessly and worked great.  I would not hesitate to get another DPMS 308.  The Gen 2 is also a lot lighter.

Doesn't the Armalite use proprietary mags?

Stick with the DPMS or similar pattern 308 AR

The G II is a nice piece. You should consider Bud's Guns, online. That's where my G II (among other firearms in my arsenal) came from. Good prices, fast reliable customer service and shipping.

They have the G II Recon you want in stock. With a good price, and free shipping to the lower 48.

The rock river is its own animal. It was rolled out during the AWB as there were tons of pre-existing FAL mags around. Parts are proprietary however people swear by their accuracy...

The G2 is new, it will be wait and see as to the availability of aftermarket parts. It is lighter but I would advise that you look for an original LR308 . The LR platform is discontinued but it is probably the closest thing to an industry standard.

Armalite would probably be the best choice of the 3 you listed. "A" models use DPMS/SR25 pattern mags (pmags). Many people still swear by the B models and the original Armalite mags which can be had for some reasonable prices now...

I'm planning on picking up one of those DPMS GII Recon rifles soon. Probably will do some upgrades to it such as a 15" rail from SLR, and an adjustable gas block from SLR, and a better trigger, add a scope, and stuff like that. I've heard of some over-gassed issues, but I think the adjustable gas block should solve that. Already comes with a AAC mount for my AAC suppressor, so that saves me some cash on buying a mount. A friend of mine has a DMPS GII Hunter and he says it's been reliable. I just like how lightweight they are, and the price is right. I'll probably send the barrel off to ADCO to turn it down a bit to shave some weight off it also.

Thanks for the replies. I want to stay under or around $1,800.

Honestly, for punching holes in paper now, and hunting later, the G II Lite Hunter may be a better choice. At under $1300, you'll have money in your budget for an optic, and possibly a couple of other add ons. It is light, handles well, is accurate, recoil is mild, and the 20" barrel gets the most out of 308 ammunition. To many, it won't have the "cool factor" of the Recon, as it doesn't have a threaded barrel or a hand guard with rails. Neither of which really matter if you're punching paper or hunting, unless you want to mount a suppressor. Change the gas block on the Lite Hunter (and the stock DPMS gas block is usually a cheap aluminum gas block, rather than quality steel) and you can mount a set of flip up sights if you like.

I'm gonna buck the trend here and say an Armalite A Model of some type.  A Models take sr25/m110/dpms/etc/etc/etc pattern mags.

I have a Ruger SR762 with about 1k rds through it. The only complaint that I have is that it's relatively heavy. The only things that I've changed is a Giesellie SSA-E trigger and a roller cam. I use Magpul magazines and so far it's eaten everything that I've stuffed into the mags. I'd buy another today if I needed one. I bought it new at a lgs and paid a little over $1500 for it.

I'd stay away from the RRA fal mag thing.  There was a reason why armalite didn't go w/ the FAL mag approach w/ an AR pattern rifle in the ban years.  I recall when BM had the design (leased from RRA) they couldn't get bolts to last.  RRA must have some better mettulurgy to make their design work, but that just goes to show the design is at the margins.

The DPMS G2 is probably the direction I'd go, but Armalite makes great well engineered well thought out and well executed complete 308AR if you don't mind a little extra weight compared to the g2.

the "original (90's) Armalite mags" are the M14 based mags.  The gen 2 M14 based mags are about 10000x better htan the converted M14 mags of yester year and have cult following.  People get too hung up over the price of mags from ban years trauma.

The "LR" pattern is actual the KAC pattern.   We need to stop giving DPMS credit for KAC's design.
