| Are AR-10 rails completely different than AR-15 rails? There seems to be so many more options for AR-15 rails. I can only assume that the barrel nut is probably different, therefore affecting everything. I'm slowly piecing together a AR-10 with a PSA lower and upper. The barrel and rail is the next thing on the list. Then I just need a bolt and I'm good to go. |

Yes they are ... I recently purchased a Fortis 308 from Rainer Arms
See their selection AR10 and AR15 |

Yes they are different. Check the info thread at the top of the AR Variant section. It has a list of the parts that are interchangeable between the AR15 and AR10.
Worse yet, there are differences in the rails between patterns of the AR10 platform. It is a shame there is no standardization like the 15. As endofdays stated, PSA uses a low profile whereas Aero uses a high profile. There are less options available for the AR10 than the AR15. |

Even within the manufacturers, you can have 4 different specs for rail height.
Example: DPMS Original LR-308 high upper receiver with no FA or EJPC AP4 with high rail AP4 with low rail GII That's just one of the manufacturers. ArmaLite has their own thread pattern for barrel nuts, as does Rock River. There is some degree of compatibility between nuts from the LR-308 with other makers, and KAC has its own thread pattern as well. I lost track of what works with what, and I've been trying to follow this market since the early 2000s, have owned 5 AR10s/LR-308s/LR-260s myself. One handguard that is AR15 size but fits the large frame guns is the JP system, with a 2" tube, unlike the monster sized tubes from the original guns that are all well over 2" diameter. That's what I used on my GA Precision built 260 Rem AR. |

yep, it can be a crapshoot, I have a SunDevil 308 receiver set [post Aug 2009 "low height-1.253" ] and used a ApexMachine gator grip handguard and their top rail for that 1.253" height and there is still a slight difference at the receiver vs rail height . oh well, when I finish a few other builds I might try another rail that says it fits the DPMS "low" but hey it shoots nice |
