What is the difference between the rifle buffer tube and the carbine buffer tube?
1/13/2016 2:23:04 PM EDT
[#1]
Both the length and outer dimensions. Rifle tubes are long and smooth, while carbine tubes are shorter and have a facility to accept a stock.

Wait, so you can't put a stock on a rifle tube?

Har har. Not a carbine stock.

Now I'm totally confused.  I'm building an AR-308 and want to put on a fixed stock.  I don't know what buffer tube to use.  I'm also confused about the different buffer weights and springs.  Can anyone clear up this confusion.

Which fixed stock?

Sorry for confusing you. By fixed stock do you mean A2 style that uses a rifle length buffer tube? That will work but you will need the shorter DPMS 308 rifle buffer

I haven't picked one out yet, but I was thinking A2 style.

Which rifle stock do you want to use?

Most rifle stocks you will need a standard ar15 type rifle extension. You will need a 308 rifle buffer and an Armalite 308 spring or DPMS 308 rifle spring.  The armalite and DPMS rifle buffers are pretty much the same.

Things get more complicated when you move to the carbine stock systems.

Armalite uses a longer carbine receiver extension that is the same length as a VLTOR A5 receiver extension. Armalites 308 buffer is the same length as an AR15 carbine buffer and it weighs pretty much the same as an H3 buffer. Armalite uses the same spring for their carbine and their rifle setups.

DPMS pattern carbine 308's use a standard AR15 length receiver extension. They use a shortened buffer that weighs roughly the same as an H2 buffer. Because of the shortened buffer/short tube design, they use a short 308 carbine specific spring.

Thanks for the help.  I think I know what to get now.  I have the DPMS style lower.

Just to be clear.  The buffer systems can be run on Armalite or DPMS pattern lowers.  You just have to use all the correct parts together.

If you want to run an A2 stock, here is what I would purchase from Brownells.\

.308 rifle buffer spring http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/recoil-parts/recoil-springs/308-ar-buffer-springs-prod42988.aspx

.308 rifle buffer http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/recoil-parts/recoil-buffers/308-ar-buffers-prod42989.aspx

Rifle buffer tube http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/buffer-tube-parts/buffer-tubes/ar-15-m16-rifle-length-buffer-tube-prod17502.aspx

The buffer tube is out of stock.  It's also 6061 instead of the preferable 7075.  You could purchase a Colt 7075 tube for about $55, but they're out of stock too.

That's pretty clear.  Thanks.  How would you like to make me a shopping list for the upper?  Just kidding.
