Never owned any AR platform, only hunting rifles.  Shot many AR-15s and recently shot Armalite AR-10 and loved it.  I was thinking about getting AR-15 for a while, but I can't see a reason not to go AR-10.  My go to hunting rifle is 308 Savage.  I've been doing a little research and here are my choices:

Sig716-priciest of the bunch, coming in a little over 2000 w/o optics.  My thoughts are that it is a quality build but maybe a little on the heavy side.

Armalite AR-10 - middle prices around 1500

DPMS recon gen2 - best priced at just over $1000 which would allow me to get better optics.  A little lighter as well.

I plan to use as secondary hunting rifle, when I'm camping myself in my shooting cabin and not worried about lugging around heavy arms.  There's also a tactical military training site near me where civvies can go and have fun.  Probably go there every other month and put a couple hundred rounds through, also long range shooting there with tannerite targets to have some fun.  I want to minimize costs but if any of you can convince me to go with the sig I'll go that route.

As for a build, not quite ready to get into that.  Want a ready to go rifle and maybe build once I get familiar with the parts.

Good idea to get a built rifle... I have a GII MOE and I'm very happy with it.

The ArmaLite Def 10 is the far and away best value for your $. It just isn`t a contest. It will do anything you need it to do.

What DPMS did you have? At least a GII of some form since that's what he's asking about?

I had the Gen I. Wasn`t a bad gun. But the ArmaLite  was  still a better made, more refined gun. Haven`t handled the Gen II, but based on my experience ArmaLite still wins at his price point. I also own and shoot the Sig 716, and the LMT 308 MWS. I like them all. The ArmaLite handles the best and is my favorite. And again, in his stated price range, it`s no contest. You are talking  about a $400-500 price difference between  the Def 10 and the Gen II, with the more proven ArmaLite being the less expensive gun.

The Sig's a very nice rifle.  If you have the disposable income where the price isn't really a factor, then it or another high end .308 shooter would be pretty cool...Larue, etc.  For most people who have some realistic budget constraints, the Armalite and DPMS Gen II rifles are pretty darned good performers.  I have a pair of Armalite AR10 .308's, but I'd be confident going with either brand.

I have a Ruger 762 that I really like. Also would throw out the S&W M&P 10 which is really nice also. Been down the DPMS road a few times and would advise to avoid those. You will quickly sell the DPMS and move up anyway so save the money and time.

I was in your exact same position. New to ARs wanted a bigger round. More punch, more penetration.

I got the sig 716. I wanted a piston and she just felt right.
I heard a ton of horror stories about 716s but mine has been flawless through 300 rounds. Not ONE issue. What does suck is the weight, the short handguard. The lack of aftermarket parts and the trigger.

About 308s. Sometimes i wish i got 556 for the lighter weight, the cheaper prices, the ability to carry more rounds and the noticeable recoil difference. Follow up shots are hard with 308. They way almost triple and cost atleast double.

Sometimes i feel that for the money i shouldve gone with a top tier 556. You can get something nice for the price. But honestly. ... i love my sig.

I don't know about horror stories on the SIG 716 but mine also has been flawless. Only mod I made was a Geissele SSA-E trigger. Usually shoots about 1 moa some times better with 168 FGMM or tailored 168 SMK hand loads.

Well here are my two. Bought the 20" DPMS lite hunter just before the G2 came out, came in around $1100 at the time. Then the 18" Palmetto build on the bottom, same gun can be put together for around $650 right now, think I have $680 OTD in mine. Palmetto has had a true learning curve on their gun but I think they are getting there. But here are the results from yesterday. Doing load development, 3 shots upper right are the PSA with a stock trigger, lower right is the DPMS with the FF and 2 stage trigger.

I just got back from 5 days of elk hunting in the mountains.

Lightweight is very important for me, and even though you're in FL, I know a handy lightweight gun is better down there as well.  I've spent plenty of time humping the woods in Georgia and Louisiana as well.

If you're set on .308, I would get either the DPMS GII LW Hunter, or the ArmaLite DEF10 and configure it like Derek45 did his.
