I started off asking about the Stag 7 a few weeks back and a lot of you have helped educate me more on what's available.  I've been looking very hard at the Bison uppers and they offer 16-22" inch barrel lengths.  I am pretty well set on the 20" barrel, my question is what does the 22" barrel/upper have to offer?  From everything I have read the 16-20" barrels are where the optimum performance is for the 6.8 round.  Would a 22" barrel hurt the performance side of the 6.8 caliber, loss in velocity, loss in energy?  Is there any data available on what the 22" vs 20" barrel can or can't do?  I've been trying to find information and haven't had any luck.  All the reviews I have found are on the 16, 18 and 20" barrel lengths.

My other question is does the Intermediate length gas system on the 20" upper work well with all bullet weights?  85-120gr range.

20 -22in, you may gain 50 +/- fps at the cost of weight. You are looking at a rifle length gas system. I heard mixed results with light bullets in a rifle length bullets. I'll let someone else with more experience about that.

You might ask the question on the 68 forum too.

The 6.8 was designed to run in 14.7 to 16in barrels.
This is why over 20in is the land of diminishing returns.
The only way I think I would run a 22in barrel in an AR platform with the 6.8 is if I was going for long range shots with the 130gr or 140gr VLD or CC Bergers.
By long range I mean 800 to 1000 yards.
Rifle gas is sometimes more finicky with lighter bullets.

An 18 or 20in mid-gas will do anything you need them to.

Love my Bison 6.8 (SPR) upper, 18" barrel. Mid-length

Loves Hornady factory ammo and easy to shoot out to 600...plus it puts the hurtin' on hog and deer if you are into that. No need for 20"

I can't help you on the 22" but our 20" likes the 110 gr. Vmax and the 120 gr. SST. You go below 90 gr. bullets and the accuracy drops off a bit.

I have a Bison 18" SPR barrel with an Aero upper. I think 6.8 in general is picky on loads, but when you get it right they are tack drivers.

Same set up as mine.  I'm shooting the 115gr SMKs in mine.  Consistent 1/2" groups.  Hogs drop in their tracks when you put one in their ear.

My 18" Bison barrel loves Hornady 120gr SST's and AA2200 powder...

I've got the 18" SPR upper as well. Very, very accurate with any load I've run through it.
