1. Can the HG be removed, or is it a one-piece unit?

2. How far back on the barrel from the muzzle end does fhe fluting on a 16" barrel go?

It's a monolithic upper, so the upper and the rail are all one single machined piece. There's nothing to remove.

Mine isn't fluted, so I can't help you with that.
