I just picked up a 450 Bushmaster upper.  A local farmer had it dirt cheap so I jumped on it; I don't want to argue about which big bore is best.

I need to put something on it, it doesn't have any sights, and as it will be a hunting/toy, I won't put any BUIS on it.  I have an EoTech 512 and a Leupold 3-9 laying around, but I don't know if either is ideal for this rig.  My understanding is that the bottom falls out past 200 yards.

So what are y'all running on the big bores?  I'm thinking something like an ACOG would be the best, but I probably won't be dropping that much coin on this rig, at least not until I decide I'm in love with it.  Do you prefer red dots?  Fixed scopes?  Variables?  I'll mostly use it to hunt hogs, and we usually get them at 50-150 yards, but sometimes they are at barrel tap distances, and sometimes well beyond the range of this cartridge.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have one, but if I did, I'd probably try one of the 1-4x or 1-6x scopes. I have a Burris Mtac on one rifle and really like the reticle - great for up close (big donut) and decent for longer range (smaller ranging dots).

When you say "hunting", how far for most shots?  I like the 2-7 range optics for good middle ground in about as far as I'm shooting in the 50-300 yard range with a .308, and that would probably more than cover it for the 450.  Hogs and coyotes are my main focus also, and the longer distances usually involve the coyotes.  Terrain plays a big part in this too, as I don't get extremely long shots in the river bottom/flood plain I'm usually in due to heavy trees and foliage.  That Primary Arms illuminated scope in the 1-6 has gotten mighty good reviews and seems to cover quite a few bases in that package.  I've been tempted by that one.  I know quite a few mention how good open sights and red dots are out to a very decent range, but I'm not that confident past 100 yards with a red dot.  Some of these illuminated scopes seem to provide the best of both worlds.

I run a EOTech 512 on one .458S, a Leupold VX-3 1.75 to 6 on another, a Leupold VX1 2-7 on another, and a Millet DMS 1-4 on another.  The 2-7 is my favorite and they are pretty cheap.  The 1.75-6x is great too but cost twice as much as the VX-1 and to me they seem every bit as good as the VX-3.  The DMS is good but I don't really like using a cantilevered mount if I don't have to.

I have a leupold mk4 cqt 1x3 on my 458 socom and a weaver 1.5 x 6 on my beowulf. both are fine for where I hunt seldom do I get a shot past 125-150 yds . I have to agree with big bore I had a leupold 2x7x33 on my socom for along time
they are great for big bore ar's . you said you have a 3x9 leupold in hand I would consider just putting that on and call it good .

I run a VXR .1.25-4 but have had an Aimpoint 3-9 on it.  The 3-9 was a bit much but worked well.  I put a less expensive vortex on my pistol and blew it up.  Will keep to the VXR or Eotech for future builds for the big bores.

Obviously a Leupold will hold up to the recoil.
If you dont intend on running into a hog at 15 feet in the woods or maybe if you do, you already have a 3-9x leupold so slap that on there for a while.

To me it make sense to buy an illuminated scope if you will use it for hogs.
The primary Arms 1-6x IR scopes are nice and wont break the bank.
Vortex has a new 1-6X IR scope coming out soon. Looks nice. No experience with it yet.

I have a Hawke Endurance 30 1.5-6X Hawke on my AR15 in 358 Gremlin and so far its pretty nice.  Heavy, Clear, Illuminated dot, machined aluminim flip up caps but not enough time with it to know how it will hold up. Forgiving eye box, easy image pickup, good eye relief. Thing is built like a tank but first off the rubber on the magnification ring is loose so...Not sure how that will work out. Chinese so....

Probably the best would be a Leupold 1-4x or 1.5-5x IR.

A good/best all around non illuminated woods to field scope would be a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 for a moderate priced scope that can take a beating. Not too many 2-7x illuminated scopes which I dont understand. I am trying a Mueller 2-7x IR multishot on a St Marie mount on a Swiss K31 right now because I need a rounded left side (no left side knob) because the shell ejects straight up. Not sure how it will hold up but it looks nice so far and is clear.

I have had the Leopuld 2-7x VX1 scopes on a 458 socom, 50 beo, 375 ruger and a 458 winmag with no problems.

Thanks for the comments.  I have a Primary Arms 1-6 ACSS GII on my truck gun (5.56) and I LOVE the reticle.  The scope is nice, I like the magnification range, but I'm a glass snob and the glass is Chicom all the way.  It's great for a $250 scope.

I think the 3-9 is a little much for this rig, but I may run it and see.  I'm leaning toward the PA 1-4 just because it's dirt cheap and if I decide I don't like the 450 I'm only out $120.  I also have a  VXI 2-7 on my son's rifle (CZ 527) and I really like it, that's a good choice I hadn't thought of.

I'm not really worried about the illuminated reticle, as if I hunt after dark I have a dedicated NV rig, but I mostly just use a light.

Thanks again for the thoughts, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.  I think a low power variable is the answer.

That's a good scope.  A friend has one that I tried out, and I nearly bought one.  Not a bad price either.

What you Don't want, is a non-magnified red dot.  They work fine when you can clearly see your target in good light, or don't care where you place the bullet on the animal......but that is usually not the case.  A lot of shots on hogs are going to occur in brush, tall grass, trees, etc and many times in low light conditions.....and the hog will be dark in color.  Without magnification, you can't tell the ass end from the front end of the hog and you will have no idea where you are aiming on the animal.

I use a Leupold VX-R HOG 1.25-4X20 FireDot on my Beowulf.  It is a really sweet scope and, obviously, being a Leupold there's no worry about recoil damage.  If I could do it all over again, I would go with the same scope.  The FireDot is a great option for any low light situation and since it's a motion activated and deactivated, you don't have to worry about the battery.

Oh crap.  Now I am going to need to get another hog plex scope.  Did not realize they are motion activated now.  I am building a new 16" socom.  Maybe for that one.

That is one sweet beowulf. Whats the spec's? Am considering one. Already have a 10.5 inch barreled 308. Will have to look at that scope. didn't know it was motion activated.

Thanks, the upper is a bit of a mystery, the former owner sold it as an Alexander Arms and I didn't know any better at the time so I had no idea until a year later.  The seller was a real ass about it (someone here on Arfcom) but while he screwed me over, the upper shoots incredibly accurate so it's not a total loss.  The lower is an Alexander Arms that I bought brand new.  In addition to the optics, it has a Daniel Defense Omega free float rail, Magpul CTR stock, LimbSaver recoil pad and a King Armory KA-0450 muzzle brake.  The recoil still hits hard but it's a very comfortable push instead of a shoulder bruiser.  I was really shocked by the accuracy and power at range, first time at 200 yards, before completely sighting in the scope, she was hitting steel like a sledgehammer.  I inadvertently broke the steel targets at 100 and 150 yards using AA "target" ammo lol.  It's a mean motor scooter lol.

That's a 16 inch barrel, correct? Put a magpul prs stock on it but get the pad for 50 bmg on it. I put one on my bolt 50 bmg. Sweet comfort.

What is the weight of that monster? What is the furthest you have shot it accurately? The scope handles the recoil with no issues?
