I'm relatively new to the AR308 area and just built my first one last year on a DPMS lower. I just got it together last fall and didn't get to shoot it much before winter hit. Tonight, I took it out for some load development/chrono work, and after about 15 rounds, I had a failure to extract. There was no cleaning rod handy, so I packed it in and went for home. After taking the upper apart, I realized that the case wasn't stuck...the extractor claw was broken. It was part of a NiB BCG from AimSurplus, and honestly, I probably only have 100 rounds on the rifle overall. Disappointing in the BCG, but $hit happens...
I looked on Midway for a replacement extractor and noticed 1) they are expensive and 2) they are largely out of stock. Coincidentally, I noticed that Midway has a repair kit with a lot of other parts AND an extractor and extractor spring for the same price as the extractor/spring kit that is sold out. Here are my questions... 1) Is the extractor/spring in the repair kit the same as the one purchased separately? 2) Is it "normal" to have extractor issues this soon or did I just get a dud? 3) Is there a better extractor that I should purchase rather than the stock DPMS extractor/spring kit? Thank you for the advice, all. |

Fairly common in the AR308 parts gun market, because there isn't a lot of ownership when manufacturers know that parts guns are being built by frankenbuilders.
Bad metallurgy plus hard-gassed operating systems with badly reamed chambers will result in broken extractors. I would also contact AIM. |

I've thought about emailing AIM. They are great folks, but I'd feel guilty about going back to them. Heck, I bought that bolt last February and didn't get the rifle together until the fall. There probably is some statute of limitations there.
I'll take a look at the JP extractor. I'm still confused on the individual DPMS extractor vs the one that you get in the kit. Anyone? |

If it's an AIM branded BCG they are responsible for it. It is obviously a defective part. I would contact AIM and ask for a replacement. The DPMS extractor might not even fit. |
