I weighed my recent Aero M5 Build. With optic and empty magazine. It tips the scales at 10.2 lbs. Which I was surprised by, it feels a lot more. When I was ordering parts, weight wasn't a driving factor. But, I was thinking about it. In the end though, I'm happy with 10.2 lbs.
What's an acceptable weight? And what does your rifle weigh? I'd like to do an average, just for shits and grins. There are a lot of variables, so it would just be a ball park figure. |

I find that balance is more important than weight. For example, an M1 Thompson SMG weighs more than a Garand, but doesn't feel like it.
An STG44 weighs more than an AK, but doesn't feel like it. Both of those weapons have the weight more in the rear, and they handle and balance well-better than the comparisons, at least for me. The barrel and BCG are where the weight is in an AR10, followed by the receivers. |

I was surprised by the size of the BCG. It's a substantial piece of metal.
The balance of my rifle is not bad. I purchased a CTR butt stock for it. But, it made it too light on the southern end. I swapped out the CTR for an ACS, which a big difference. Quoted:

I have the DPMS with a 24" Bull bbl. I use it for LR shoots to 1000 yards. It is a pig and weighs about 13 pounds unloaded but with scope aboard. I'll be building a hunting .308 auto this winter as a project. I'd love to get it down to 8-9 pounds with an 18 -20" bbl. We'll see.

9.1lbs with scope. Weight reducing (however minimal) mods: Minimalist stock, STD muzzle device. No mag/ammo. Short gun, the weight thus feels pretty concentrated. But "feeling" is an arbitrary measure, as is what is acceptable to someone. Compared to a 6lb bolt gun, it feels like a pig, but it's not unmanageable. Lb or two less would just make it even handier and less fatiguing as the day progresses. No illusions on this end, the goal was a handy gun that wasn't ridiculously heavy for what it is. At 9.1 that is probably pushing it, around 8.1 is much better, and easy to do. |

11 lbs. 3 oz. here. The scope is 1 lb 4 oz and the mount is another 8 oz so that accounts for a bit of weight. It's an Iron Ridge receiver set, Ranier 18" Match barrel, LMT Sopmod stock, JP Enterprises free float forearm, JP Low mass BCG, Geissele SSA-E trigger, Miad grip, Surefire Flash hider, Slash's H.buffer, Raptor charging handle |

Mine is a S&W MP 10. I added a full length buffer tube, spacer, stock spring and buffer per S&W's recommendations. It has an Ace skeleton stock,
Apex 13" rail, A2 flash hider, Ergo grip, Trijicon TR24G in a Larue LT120 (low) mount. 9 lbs on the dot without mag or ammo. chris |
