I am setting up a 14.5" 308 ar as a general battle rifle. Going to a shoot mostly 147,149gr surplus type ammo. What distance should i zero the irons.  All of my 5.56 ar rifles are zeroed at 50 yards. Thanks in advance

I zeroed my RRA carbine by setting the sights so rounds impact +2-1/2" at 100 yards.  At 300 yards, I can shoot neck hold on a silhouette target and drop the rounds right into the 10 ring.

At what range do you plan on doing most of your shooting? I usually zero .308 at 100 yards and .223 at 50 yards. I don't normally shoot out beyond 500 yards with the .308 and 250 yards with the .223.

Edit: (my .308 has a 20in bbl though, too.)

It's your rifle, zero it where you think makes the most sense. I zero all of my rifles at 200 yards. .223's hit 1.25" to 1.4" high at 100, .308 hit 3.5" high at 100. This allows me to shoot point blank from 0 to 230 yards +/- by simply aiming and not thinking about it. It also allows me to see my target above my iron sights.

No rules exist, it's a personal preference issue. Use what works for you. Always confirm and learn your zeroes by shooting at longer distances. What seems to be dead on at 50 yards can be several inches off at 200. I zero at 200, not at shorter ranges.

I run 300 yd zeros on everything I have except 200 on anything in x39. With my 308s the 300yd zero gives me accurate holds out to 700 with standard mildot reticle. 600 is mostly the furthest I shoot anyways.
