So I have been kicking it around in my head to build a 7.62 upper for my SBR.
2 things. I remember way back when that they never performed well and was plagued by reliability problems. I never see anyone talk about them anymore so I didn't know if they got ironed out or what. 2nd thing, where to get the parts? Id imagine I need a different bolt, mags, and barrel but don't see why I couldn't use other parts just fine. Whats the hive say? |

I built a regular midlength 16" upper in 7.62x39, a while back. All I needed was a dedicated barrel and bolt. I put the bolt into a standard bolt carrier. I had trouble with feeding due to the magazines I bought and I dremelled down the front lip of the magazines per instructions on the web, and haven't had any more problems. I am currently working on my pistol build in the same caliber. I don't anticipate any real problems due to the shorter barrel. You have to pay attention to case sizing when reloading but other than that, it works flawlessly. I just put the upper on a Jack Flat spot steel lower I welded together, and ran 50 rounds through it with no malfunctions or issues.
The ballistics are about the same as the 300 blackout, and I don't have to mess around with case forming. |

I have yet to build a short barreled variant. That said everytime you mention a 7.62x39 AR you get to her people Echoing past complaints and feeding issues. (many of the people repeating them have never fired or owned an AR in 7.62x39 )
That said My experience is limited to two brands YHM and Sota (although it is probably worth mentioning that Windham Arms has brought out a x39 ar this year. Tried a couple of Budget 1 in 10 barrles they were ok but Yankee Hill Machine 1 in 9.5 seemed the most accurate ( I think YHM is still selling their 11.5 7.62x39 and while I have nothing bad to say about Model 1 at the parralell price points I would go with YHM. I have one factory produced YHM Carbine in this caliber and have built 3 others using YHM parts. "The they don't run cheap surplus ammo echo" has been resolved firing pin mod makes lets them run cheap ammo with no issues. "There are no good Mags"I have had great Luck with ASC mags, but folks swear by the latest Generations of C Mags as well and I would like to get my hands on a few oft he 20 c mags M4 Feed ramps have cleared up often "The ramp is wrong for 7.62x39 " "The Bolts are weak" is another echo. I have to qualify and say that I don't run them full auto as I don't have a a M16. That said In a the 3000 plus rounds I have through the YHM I see no indications of over stressing the bolt. Those of us that have ARs seem to love them. a good Barrel M4 Ramps and a few decent mags you will have a a great little rifle. |

Quoted:
Why not just buy a pws 7.62 diablo, I had a 7.62 pws bolt shear a lug at about 600 rds but they warranties it quickly Don't feel like dropping 1k on a upper. Id rather buy a barrel, bolt and mag for 3-400 and put together with parts I already have laying around |

Regardless of whether is has flaws it is Mine I made it. |

I would get the following:
YHM Melonite barrel Cason bolt or Linerty Gunworks bolt (I think these are the same). Mags can be found at Aim Surplus. |
| The super bolt you are looking for is made by a company called Cason Engineering. They redesigned the bolt and made it out of tougher material that isn't as brittle as carpenter steel. 6 k round count on mine and it looks new. The bolt is a little pricey but it does come with the enhanced firing pin so you don't have to mess around with anything. |

I stopped counting rounds after 2500 or so. Not even worried about it at this point. It's taken everything I've thrown at it and still looks new after a cleaning. |
