I am building a new upper for my DPMS lower, and I bought a Blackhole Weaponry 18" barrel for it and need a new flash hider.  The Smith Vortex seems to get pretty good flash suppression reviews, and I think that I want to give one a shot.  Smith offers 2 models that might work: 0.635" and 0.735".  The thread depth of the new barrel is something under 0.620", but the 0.735" model seems to be available in more places.  Should I / could I run the 0.735", so I could be moved to other barrels?  Is there any problem running the longer thread depth on the shorter threads?

You didn't mention which caliber your upper is chambered.  You need to know as there is a different thread pattern for the larger diameter barrels.   You can probably tell which pattern thread by looking at your barrel on BHW web site.  Once you know the proper thread a crush washer, peel washer or  lock nut are used to time the flash hider or muzzle brake for the length of threads.

Sorry about that.  I guess that I got ahead of myself.

This is a 7.62x51 upper, and the thread pitch is the standard 5/8”x 24 for .30 cal.  The Smith Vortex models are 1000V (.735") or 1000V-Noveske (.635"), and unlike traditional flash suppressors, there is no need for the crush washer, etc according to their website.
