New member here.  I've done a search for this topic and am not sure I have enough time to read through them all to get the answers I need.  I have decided to go the route of the 300 BLK over the 6.8 SPC for different reasons.  I currently own a RRA LAR-15 set up for predator hunting.  My goal is to build an upper for 300 BLK to use for whitetail deer here in Central VA.  I have already read many discussions regarding pros/cons for the 300 BLK as a deer rifle and the ballistics over 200 yards.  The land I hunt doesn't allow for many shots more than 150 yards so I think I'm ok for that.  I also know to stick with 115gr or 125gr and stay away from subsonic loads.  I need some help getting pointed in the right direction for a budget build and some pointers of who to deal with and who to stay away from (read horror stories concerning a certain dealer in Texas).  Thanks for any help with this.

Congrats and welcome to the forum.  There are many different ways
you can go.  First tell us a few things.....

- Are you building a complete rifle or just a new upper??
- Are you going to go 16" or do you want a "Shorty"??
- What is your budget.....??
- Do you need/want a free float rail??

There are so many great vendors out there for 300BLK but I don't
want to recommend a $350 barrel if you are looking for a $150 range
barrel.  Everyone has a different definition of "BUDGET BUILD."

Wilson combat or Rainier arms select barrels they're in the $250 range but fantastic quality, for an upper I'd suggest buying one of the stripped aero precision blemished uppers, buy whichever handguard fits your budget and then you can use your current BCG and charging handle until you get new ones.

Thanks for the reply.  My thoughts are to build the upper and use it on my lower during deer season as I don't predator hunt much during that time.  I will be sticking with a 16" barrel as well.  I don't need anything special, just looking to drop a couple of whitetails with it.  I want to remain in the budget of about $400-$500 if that's attainable so I can have some left over money for decent glass to put on top of it.  Standard handguard is fine for me.  If this isn't realistic then I will start from scratch.  I don't want to nickel and dime it but I just don't have the money to buy what I wish for.  Thanks again.

Hopefully you reload, or you're going to pay through the nose for ammo...when you can actually find it.

Yes, I reload.  Plus I work Law Enforcement so brass is never an issue.  I know that availability of ammo is a concern which is one reason I still consider 6.8 an option.

Go with a SOTA Arms 16" barrel.  It's what I use on my deer rifle, 150 yard max setting as well.  Never had a deer run, barrel was $140 shipped IIRC.

I have been very happy with my SOTA. Fit on my Spikes lower like it was made for it and very pleased with it's accuracy with good (Hornady) ammo.

SOTA was one of the sites I checked out last night as a matter of fact.  They seem to be the best price for a barrel like what I'm looking for.

I just got a barrel from them. I cleaned it up and it looks really good. I will install it on a upper this week hopefully. The customer service was great. I also just ordered a bcg and miscellaneous parts from them.

None of my .300's have had a factory load through them for this reason. No one around me within 150 milles sells 300BLK ammo, and if you ask about it. You'll either get a "What is that?", or a "Good Luck getting it!"...

You purt near HAVE to reload for it anymore!

Does no one around you have the internet? It is not hard to find ammo for the 300BLK as it seems you just aren't looking. Some Walmart have it in stock with many other online vendors showing availability. Now if you said getting reasonably priced .22 long rifle was hard to get then I would have to whole heartily agree.

Does SOTA dimple the barrels for the gasblocks?

Here's your sign!
There is no Walmart within 60 miles of me, and even if there were. I wouldn't pay $40 for a box of 20rds. for .300BLK ammo from anywhere. What's reasonably priced about that? When I can make it for 1/4 of that. I'm certainly not going to fight for it like an idiot, or get up at the asscrack of dawn to be the first in line!

That ammo hasn't been on the shelf since the beginning of Obummer gun control efforts nowhere around me, and when it is, it's gone within minutes. Bought by someone who never owned a firearm before in their life. All because Obummer said "Gun Control".

I'm not saying they can't shoot, but, fuck, leave a little on the bone for the rest of us!

The AR-Stoner barrel is a nice barrel, I have built several AR uppers with them. My current 300blk light weight hunting AR uses their ultra light weight barrel and it is a joy to carry out in the woods with just a P300 2x7 Nikon, shooting Barnes factory VORTX 110gr TAC-Tx blacktips. I reload for plinking and fun shooting, but for home defense and hunting I keep with the Barnes loaded ammo. The blacktip is hands down better for deer than any other bullet from the 300blk, bar none! I have taken deer out to 187 yards with ease.

The Barnes factory stuff has been available on-line for a few months now, and for hunting you just need to get a box or two to get sighted in and hunt with so the cost isn't going to break the bank.

I don't plan to do a lot of shooting with this gun after it's zeroed unless a deer happens to cross the scope lens. This upper will only be on from mid November to early January.

not all 300 blackout ammo is 40.00 a box you just have to look for it . Now if a guy wants to shoot at sams club bottles of soda ripping off 20 rounds of barnes black tip is pretty stupid and expensive . If all the op wants to use the upper for is deer hunting then 25.00 - 30 dollars for a box of ammo really isnt that big a deal. alot of the popular hunting caliber ammo is in the same range . that being said I reload every thing  . I prefer to know whose loading something that could blow up in my face. I tend to error on the side of caution.

I took a nice buck this year with my 300 blk. I got my barrel from Mas Defense. Nice barrel for the money. Got the barrel and gasblock from them.

Ammo used was 110gr Barnes.

If you compare 300 BLK Quality Hunting Ammo to .223/5.56 Quality Hunting Ammo the difference in price usually isnt more than $2 a box.  I looked this week.

What distance if you don't mind my curiosity.  I'm in central VA so I imagine the terrain is a little different from where you're located. 200 yards isn't common on my hunting grounds.

Well as long as you are a reloader and have plenty of brass to make your own, you shouldn't have any problems with any components or barrel design. I put together a Model 1 sales ER Shaw barrel and it's plenty accurate out to 300 yards, but I normally shoot match grade stuff like Sierra or Nosler, or Hornady 125"s or 130's. I haven't tried any of the hunting type projectiles but I would assume that they would be just as accurate. I haven't bought or fired a single round of store bought ammo at all.

I roll my own. My .300 has never seen factory ammo. I make the cases and do the loads. I used a CMMG barrel and the rifle is VERY accurate.
You can reload .300 very easily. Its not expensive and if you do not reload now you can pick up all the bits and pieces you need from Lee for a reasonable price.

300 BLK three die set

Making the brass is simple, look on-line.  Also, there are places that will run the brass for you if you don't want to do your own.

I find the .300 BLK to be a very flexible rifle with a wide range of uses. Seems many others do too!

I'm another central VA Blackout owner/hunter, and bought for one for similar reasons, though I also bought mine to shoot subsonic and as a cast bullet platform.
I bought a budget .300 carbine upper from M&A parts. I've had no problems with them or previous Model 1 purchases (presumably your TX dealer). Both delivered inexpensive, well fitted out ARs. PSA's another good vendor I've dealt with.

Im in the Richmond area.......southside.....and put together a 300 blk last fall and scored a deer with it.......I have not shot any subs in mine and don't intend to........ammo is scarce around here....but I reload and make my own brass as well..........

the deer I killed last year was taken with my handloads..........125 nosler ballistic tip with 18 grains of H110.........I have some barnes 110 tsx bullets loaded but haven't had the chance to get out.........work is hectic.

I went with a sota arms barrel and used a Aero precision upper.......I wanted something inexpensive that would work.......I would say the Blackout will be fine for eastern deer hunting............Ive been using a 6x45 ar for years and that too is an effective round for whitetail........Barnes 85 grain X bullet does the trick............
