Having a difficult time choosing between a 3-9x40 or 4-12x50 for my LMT 308 MWS with 16" barrel.  Rifle will be used for hunting deer, hogs & plinkering around less than 500 yards.

I went with the 3.5-15x50 on mine. In an lt-120.  Always like the 50mm for some reason

I got This for my 700 SPS.

Although it's not Tacticool in the least, it holds Zero great.

I paid $189.00 for it at Optics Planet.

seeing as the starting values are only one power difference I would normally go with the 4-12 because the 12 is a huge difference compared to the 9. but to just really throw a wrench into your plans, since its more of a battle rifle, I would actually run one of these :) I have something similar on both my Win M70 and my REPR 12". My model 70 is my goto deer rifle, and I can hit a 6" plate at 450 ALL DAY LONG with that setup.

now If you are really concerned about light gathering, then yes, bet a x50mm, it will make all the difference at dawn and dusk when everything is gray. my scout style rifles all have something in the ballpark of 1-6x20 or a red dot and my precision rifles have anywhere from 3-9x40 and up. I don't know that I would lump a 16" 308 into the precision rifle category in my safe, BUT that doesn't mean you may not need high power, large objective optics on your 16" for YOUR applications.

I always think about "aim small miss small" when talking high power optics. so I would probably go 4-12x50 (which is whats on my REPR 20"), the 4x sucks up close, so I have a micro dot on a 45 for those "OH S**T" moments. we've all had them walking through the woods. so I would suggest the micro dot if you decide to go super high power on the 16".

just my .02, not trying to stir the pot, I have just found the low power optics to be amazing on my small light .308s but completely understand if light gathering is a concern.

Actually going to go with a Leupold VX-R 4-12x50 with Fire Dot.  I have a VX-R 1.25-4x20 on my BCM 5.56 & really like it for the money.
