I've already built a .223/5.56 rifle, carbine length gas system with a 16" stainless steel barrel. It is my CQB/Mid range AR.
Recently I've purchased a dpms 308 lower. I'm familiar with the ar platform, I have a few, all 5.56, this will be my first step into new calibers. I have a few questions. Keep in mind I wish to to a mid to long range rifle, leaning more so to long range. 1) Are parts readily available? 2) What LPKs will fit my receiver? What is the best? 3) What parts need to be 308 specific? Mags, receivers, barrels. What else? Are the buffers the same? 3.5) What dictates 308 or 7.62 or both capabilities? 4) I'm stuck on barrels. What length? What profile? What material? I want to get the maximun potential out of the .308 round. 5) What distance can I expect on paper? What lethal distance? This is not my first build, but my first build with a new caliber and my first 308 build. So feel free to school me on anything I should know. Or be aware of. I'm nervous. I hope this isn't bothersome or too much. |

There's a forum for other calibers in here somewhere. The 308 caliber is discussed in detail. It specifically address what mfg. parts fit with the DPMS. I used it for my Bushy ORC. Good choice as there are a lot of parts available.
You'll dig the .308. Eta; it's on the front page under AR Variants. |

Keep in mind I wish to to a mid to long range rifle, leaning more so to long range. 1) Are parts readily available? Yeah they are around...generally a bit more expensive and they're not all plug and play as the two different patterns ar10 vs lr308...each requiring parts matching that pattern. 2) What LPKs will fit my receiver? What is the best? any 308 lpk will work. the trigger is really up to you and what you prefer or can afford. 3) What parts need to be 308 specific? Mags, receivers, barrels. What else? Are the buffers the same? receivers, handguard, barrel, bcg, buffer and spring. I believe the bolt catch and spring are larger on the 308 lower as well. 3.5) What dictates 308 or 7.62 or both capabilities? 308 barrels can handle 7.62 pressure but not the other way around. it's flipped from what the 223/556 relationship is. I got a barrel with a 308B chamber, which is basically trying to do what a wylde chamber does for 223/556. be the best of both worlds. So far I'm very happy with it. 4) I'm stuck on barrels. What length? What profile? What material? I want to get the maximun potential out of the .308 round. This is entirely up to you really. what are your goals with the rifle? to bench shoot or stay in one spot prone? will you be hiking/hunting? longer the barrel the more velocity you get but the heavier and more cumbersome it'll be. 5) What distance can I expect on paper? What lethal distance? I'd say this depends entirely on you, the rifle and the conditions, loads your shooting. This is not my first build, but my first build with a new caliber and my first 308 build. So feel free to school me on anything I should know. Or be aware of. I'm nervous. make sure everything you get matches the pattern your building (ar10 vs lr308) and be aware that there's now a low profile and high profile upper receiver and handguard set up for the lr308 which means you need to match those up as well or your rail heights from receiver to handguard will be off. I hope this isn't bothersome or too much. |
