I've done a search on this site but can't find anything so far about a fairly recent M16 variant I've found mentioned.  As I read it, the M93 butt stock was made by Magpul and was only used for a short time before being upgraded to an improved design.  Can anyone relate any first hand experience with the original version?  Did you like or dislike this stock, and why?  TIA for any help!

I think Det 1 used them as well.

Any idea how they performed?  Why were they replaced?  Inquiring minds...

They were well-liked.  Performed well.  Many arfcommers loved them.  IIRC there might've been some stock-adjustment/length preset tabs that broke on rare occasion or something of that sort.

If you like the stock itself and found one to buy, then go for it imo.

They were a huge improvement over the original Colt stocks but didn't give you much over the newer Colt stocks as far as adjustment and butt plate size.  I remember Det 1 having some but the Det had a lot of oddball items that the rest of the Corps didn't have and SOCOM didn't field because they were in a seam between service funding and SOCOM funding.  They had a lot of latitude to outfit the unit with off the shelf kit.  The M93 was one of those buys.  In the end, they went away with the Det and the Colt and LMT stocks prevailed.

Read the other day that Ergo bought the rights from MagPul and still makes them

I have an M93 sitting in the parts bin.  It is still a better stock than a lot of what is out there now; but the UBR is a better replacement.

The major issues the Marines were having with them was the presets breaking and the toe of the stock could break off if you did a mortar-clearance aggressively.

There are actually several M93 variants - there was an early group buy M93 offered to AR15.com.  Then there was the official production M93 (the one I own).  I think there were two other M93 variants after that.  I forget the specifics now; but one of them added a steel brace to the toe of the stock to reinforce it.  Originally there was going to be all kinds of modular stock toes for the system; but that never happened.
