Anybody else having issues with the bolt catch set screw size .....I tried standard then tried metric and all just spin ......ended up using a small torx , good thing they weren't tight. It's supposed to be 1/16 but I have tried 2 different new 1/16 allen wrenches and both just spin in the head. I was a tool & die machinist for 10 years so i'm not being an idiot. I think mega just blew the head out of size when it was broached. Both of the set screws on the bolt catch are jacked up Just wondering if anyone else was having the same problem. I just got this MATEN set new from JSE so its in the rush manufacturing era.
Going to contact them for 2 new set screws because they are custom made , not just a regular set screws http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f374/MAKO199/20130309_141853.jpg |

This has been a notorious problem in both the AR-10 pattern and DPMS LR-308 pattern lowers as it relates to the bolt catch screw.
It has become even worse it the Insane rush to manufacture parts in todays climate...so your analysis is correct. The other Issue is that many of these parts are very small and need to be handled with care when manufactured... Lastly, many of these small parts are being manufactured in third world countries like China, and we all know how well the QC is with Chinese made parts etc. |
| We at Mega Arms ONLY use American made products, machined from American made materials. Those bolt catch screws, are from a swiss screw machine located down the freeway in Washinton, made from stainless steel. If the screw is black in color, its a DPMS product. Just a FYI. |

NOT MEGA'S FAULT....... I got the new replacement screws from Mega and they seemed the same as the old ones both allen wrenches just spun in them with no resistance at all. I said to myself WTF this can't be. So i pulled out my micrometer and measured the not new, but never used craftsman allen wrench .061". Then I measured the other off brand allen .060" well I know 1/16 is .0625 so they seem small but I don't know what the tolerance is. So now I did what I should have done before I posted this thread on the internet. I got up and when't out into the cold garage ( in bare feet ...damn that was cold!) to retrieve my old and well used Bondhus Allen set and would you believe it measured .062" . I tried it in the screws Mega sent and it actually grabs and works.
SORRY MEGA MY FAULT (and a little bit Crapsman tools and maybe China)....... |
