I threw this upper together in light of the absurd .223 / 5.56 ammo costs.
Having a bunch of 5.45x39 for my 74 made this easier, as I have a bunch of it.
Upper Specs: 16" Ballistic Advantage mid length barrel - melontie treatment on the barrel and gas block / NiB on the barrel extension. Ballistic advantage bolt PSA bolt carrier unknown key forge upper 11" Troy Bravo rail TA44R-2 Trijicon ACOG DPMS A2 flash hider. Lower Specs: This is an existing lower I built for this rifle. Once lowers come back down in price, I'll build one out for this upper Wolff Extra Power hammer spring B5 Sopmod Spikes Tactical "CAR" buffer - was a limited run for AIM Shooting observations: This is a sweet shooter. I shot 600 rounds of Russian 7n6 from the factory "539" which is the TULA plant. Ammo is from 1976. Zero issues from the ammo or upper, one of my cprod mags had a follower issue and was quickly remedied by banging it on the bench. I was able to shoot 10 rounds out of a 20 round PMAG and 15 rounds out of a 30 round PMAG with no issues either. I zero'd at 50 yards then moved out to 100 yards and dialed in the triangle at 100. My target at 100 yards - you can see the progression as I dialed in.
Overall I really enjoy this upper. For those who are going to ask, the blue tape on the mags, stock, and VFG is to identify the upper / rifle as 5.45x39. I have blue tape on my respective ammo cans with 5.45 in it, this keeps .223 from being loaded by accident. Which is why I do this, I've seen it happen both ways before.

Funny that you use blue tape on your mags, I mark mine with identical blue tape. I enjoy seeing these projects coming together I got a multipack of colors a while back at Walmart. Blue = 5.45 - AR and AK74 mags Green = Yugoslavian BHO ak mags Red = East German and Polish AK mags. I did have red on my 5.56 mags, but wanted a way to keep my AK mags identified by origin. |
Took my Spikes upper out today. 1st time I shot it on a stock lower got 4-5 rounds/mag with failure to fire. Bought a Wolffs heavy spring, but last week was frustrated when I got 1/2 the rounds failing to fire, then I looked and found out I installed the trigger spring backwards. ![]() Fixed that and it ran like a top. Trigger is heavy and ammo is dirty as hell, but reasonably accurate with russian surplus (about 3-4 MOA) and shot about 200 rounds for 1/2-1/3 of the cost of 223 (prepanic prices). I'm a fan.

lol
first time i used my new (new at that time) 5.45 upper, i had a bunch of failures to fire... with the heavy hammer spring. i complained on here about it and someone asked if it was installed right, OF COURSE!!!! .... uhhh, come to find out i HAD installed it incorrectly.
i fixed the spring and it was 100% after that. |

Good god. All I have to do is switch uppers and I'm back in 5.56 ![]() And here I was thinking i'd be cool by buying a CMMG .22 drop in kit. I'm not thinking on that grand of a scale. I was going to build a .22 upper, but 5.45x39 is cheaper than .22 right now
A 525 brick of federal is selling for $100. Unless you saw a unicorn on the drive to work and immediately stop at the closest Walmart. I'm shooting 5.45 at $0.138 per round at the moment. |
