I just took delivery of a Rock River LAR8. It has a fixed stock which I will replace but my question is about hand guards. It has the free float two piece plastic guards that are held in place by a slip retainer. Has anyone replaced these with a quad rail? RRA has some but they all say some gun smithing required.
Thanks

Sorry for the late reply. I believe the ones you can find on RRA's catalog are all free float and made to replace the Delta ring assemblies and barrel nut completely. I got mine back when it was hard to find any free float pieces to fit the RRA proprietary barrel nut. That is why they have the gunsmith installation recommendation.

The rail on my mid length RRA LAR8 is a surefire M85. It's made to just be a replacement for GI handguards. I'm sure there are other companies that make more.If your only desire is quad rail, that same rail will work for you as well. Again, there are likely others that make them, and you might have another brand preference.

Here's a link to the one I have: Surefire M85 You can see in the description, it says it uses the same triangular cap to hold it on as the GI plastic parts.

I have a rock river that I have changed out handguards on several times. By gunsmithing they mean removing and replacing parts. Plenty of google videos on it out there.

I'd recommend not getting a RRA handguard though and looking at the others out there. My carbine length handguard and front sight base both weighed A LOT compared to what is available on the market.

Also, if it has threads on a RRA, then it has loctite, use a heat gun.
