Anyone have experience with the 30 RAR? I'm wondering what the velocity and trajectory would be like from a 16-18" barrel using 110g Barnes X bullets. I'd like to see velocities near 2800fps or better.

Nice looking rig ya got there. How is accuracy? Have you taken any deer with it? I normally hunt with a Browning BAR .308 but I am looking for a short AR upper that will give me similar results. It looks like I can give up a little bullet weight and still maintain the trajectory with the 30 RAR. I know a 100g .243 Barns X has plenty of killing power so I see no reason this won't work. I'm not comfortable shooting deer with small lightweight bullets like the 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC and I don't want to give up any velocity by using the heavier bullets. I've been looking at the 300 WSSM but people claim you need 22-24" barrel to get the velocity I'm after. Starting to feel like I'm chasing a non existent caliber.

The .30 RAR is a fine round, but has nearly zero support from the AR Industry so far...Remington has done a fine job once again with there marketing and product support...It would do even better if it was necked down to 6.5mm or 7mm and then given plenty of brass for reloaders etc. It was doomed when they figured they would use/need to use a proprietary barrel extension/bolt/upper/mags and then give nearly zero support/marketing. JMHO...Good Luck. |

Most of my shots will be under 100yrds. The furthest shot I'd consider would be 300yrds and that won't happen very often. 6.5 Grendel is out, I won't even consider it. I've read some pretty positive reviews on a 95g Barnes X in the 6.8 SPC. But, here's the kicker.............
Mike from DTech says that his 25 DTI uses up like 95% of it's powder in an 18" barrel. The smaller caliber DTIs need a longer barrel to burn up all the powder. So I'm thinking that the larger the bullet diameter, the shorter the barrel could be. This is just speculation though. The DTI is a necked down 6.8 SPC. And the 6.8 SPC is actually a necked down 30 Rem. So why couldn't I have a 30 Rem AR upper with a 16-18" barrel????? I understand the 30 Rem is dead now, but I think I could locate some brass and dies. Mike says the 25 DTI is faster than a smaller caliber bullet of the same weight. And since the 30 cal is larger in diameter than any DTI or SPC, there would be more surface area for the powder to push against, which should keep the velocity up there pretty good while still using a short barrel........................Does this make since to anyone besides me? And before you ask, I know the 30 Rem is not the same as a 30 RAR, but I would imagine it's pretty close in at least case capacity, and the 30 Rem should use the 6.8 bolt. swampie |
I really wanted this rifle. Remington has been a great disappointment. One still can't buy brass in spite info from Remington insiders that it was likely to offer brass last spring. Didn't happen! I had one of these babies ordered but sadly cancelled as Remington told me they had no production calender for the 30 RAR for the remainder of 2012 and thru 2013. Still can't wrap my head around Remington not supporting the 6.8 SPC market with a rifle and uppers let alone the 30 RAR .javascript:insertText(' ');
