Looking for some load data for my SOCOM. Lost all my data when my computer crashed, I knew I should have just written the stuff down. I have a large stock of the bulk Remington 300 and 405 as well as Win 296 powder. The barrel is an old one of Marty's with a carbine gas system. In my searches I didn't turn up much data for 296 as it looks like folks have switched to lil gun and Re7.
Thanks for any help. |

Data for 296 is the same as for H110. For 300 gr. bullets, jacketed or TSX, NOT the TTSX, max charge of 296/H110 is 35.4 gr. for about 1800 fps. For TTSX bullets max charge is 31.5 gr. for about 1700 fps. Barnes lists a max load for H110 behind the TTSX as only 28 gr. for 1700 fps but for reasons only known to God and them they used a 1:9 twist barrel. I've never been able to get 1700 fps out of any .458 SOCOM with the TTSX regardless of barrel length and that is with a 31.5 gr. charge. How they got 1700 fps with 28 gr. is a mystery to me.
For 405 gr. bullets, 33.6 gr. H110/296 for 1600 fps. Reduce all max loads by 10% and work up. Yes, I know that H110/296 should not be reduced by more than 3% according to Hodgdon but in the SOCOM, 10% reduction is fine. You are not going to 'detonate' with powders this fast or with a reduction of only 3.5 gr. |
