I have a AR carvbine in the above caliber.  It "kicks" a lot harder than I thought it would (wanted it for my oldest daughter for a deer/man stopper).  I bought a heavy-weight replacement buffer, but it is a lot shorter than the one that came with the rifle.  Any problems with putting the new buffer in?

7.62x39 is a thumper compared to 223.

Are you able to compare it to another AR 7.62x39 to see if it is normal? The recoil profile can be modified to a degree, but the energy level starts out about 1/3 higher than 223.

Beyond the buffer, there are recoil-reducing stocks and muzzle brakes to tame it down a little as well.

That sounds like you have a rifle length buffer in your AR if the replacement is shorter. All carbine buffers, regardless of weight, are the same size. I run a RRA 9mm buffer which is about 5.4oz. The heavier the buffer the better in most cases.

Do you have an A2 or rifle length stock on your AR?  It sounds like you have a Rifle length buffer that you are trying to replace with a carbine length buffer.  DO NOT DO THIS!!  You can buy a spacer for your stock that will allow you to use the new buffer you have purchased.  look here to find the spacer http://heavybuffers.com/springs.html

My AR carbine in 7.62x39 recoils considerably more than my other AR's in 5.56. With that being said, figure out what you've got going on with your buffer system. Do you have a fixed stock or adjustable? What replacement buffer did you order? Pics are always helpful. I built mine in standard M-4 configuration with an adjustable stock.

It is a DPMS lower, A2 buttstock.  I bought a Spike's heavy carbine buffer.  Please feel free to educate me about teh recoil-reducing stocks, proper spings, etc., as this is my first foray into a non-5.56 caliber.

You need a rifle buffer for an A2 stock.  Heavy Buffers offers a heavy rifle buffer, but it ain't cheap:  LINK

If you swap out the A2 for a collapsible stock, the GL Shock stock is a quality piece that really works to reduce perceived recoil.  I use it on a couple of rifles (including a 7.62x39 AR) and it really works as advertised.
