Hey all,

I have been looking at all the cool 300 black stuf that has been coming out over the last year or so and was wondering if any other wildcats based on the .223 are worth pursuing, maybe about a 6.5mm?  Or is there not enough gain over the 5.56 or the 300 for it to be worth it?

I think the 25/223 and 6.5 PCC are the flattest shooting.  The 25/223 has a load with a 100gr SP with a BC over .400 going 2600 fps from a 16 inch tube.

The 30 cal wildcats offer surplus bullets, and Barnes makes some Great bullets for both the 300 Blackout and 7.62x40WT.   All these wildcats can give you a bullet that is still expanding at 300 yards, and offer more ft/lbs vs the 5.56.

Are the worth looking at, I say yes.

You can check out the ARF thread below for the 6.5mm PCC:

Actually, there are several loads and bullet combos that will make 2600 fps from a 16 inch tube. In fact several of my 16 inch rifles with mid-length gas systems will make 2630-2670 fps. But I will not post those loads because they are rifle specific.

Another 223 based wildcat is the 6mm-223 (6x45mm).  This cat has been around for a long time.  Hodgdon lists several loads that will push a 85 gn (BC ~0.4) to  2850 (from a 24 inch barrel).

The 25-223 & 6.5mm PCC are doing quite well in terms of accuracy and velocity...load developement has come along very nicely for both cartridges.

If your looking for more puch than the .223 Rem or 6mm-223 (6x45mm), then the 25-223 (with bullet weigths up to 117grs.) and with some projectiles
at or near .400 B/C.or the 6.5mm PCC with the ability to use up to 144grs. and a B/C from .245 to .636. The 25-223 seems to do a little better with the
shorter barrel lengths (16' to 18") while the 6.5mm PCC does very well with barrel lengths from 18" to 24" (velocity range from 3,120 fps to 2,240 fps)

Good Luck.

Thanks all, I'll be checking out those for sure.  The 6.5ppc and 25-223 looks like exactly what I was thinking of.

+1 to above.

The 6x45, 25-223 and 6.5 PCC are all good cartridges and have significantly more punch than a 223.

I think 25 cal to 6.5mm or 6.8mm is the sweet spot.

Many calibers made for the AR from 223 brass, 5mm, 6mm, 6.5mm,
7mm, 8mm, up to 30 and even some have played with
338
I have seen a few in the tcu like 6mm tcu, 6.5 tcu and 7mm  tcu

6x45........easy to make, accurate and packs more punch than the venerable .223........Barnes 85 grain XBT.....will get the Deer and other critters.............Just a barrel change...........

All of the 223 based wildcats are "just a barrel change"!

Yeah, that's why I like the idea of them so much I think, I can use the same components for so much of the rifle.

Some may or may not require a mag change as well.....not sure......If no change in magazine is required, Im sure there is diminished capacity.......I've been shooting the 6x45 since 98......I even built a Savage/Stevens 200 in this caliber.......tack driver......

Hi daisho,

The 223 Rem based wildcat that I am familiar with (25-2223Ar) is loaded to STANAG mag specs. The maximum loaded cartridge length is 2.26 inches.  A 30-round STANAG mag will hold  and shoot 30 rounds.  I have also built several 300 Whispers a.k.a 300 Blackout and they also did not suffer any "diminished" mag capacity.  Here is a picture of a Beta-C loaded with 100 300 Whisper rounds.  All 100 were successfully fired without any jams failure to feed etc...

</a>" />

As far as accuracy goes, the 25-223Ar can run with the rest of them.  Here is a link to a  721 yard parrie dog kill .

I would guess that if the other 223 Rem based wildcats are loaded to 2.26 inches they will also work at full capacity of any STANAG mag as well.

Ditto for the 6.5mm PCC round as well...Confirmed Deer kills from 110 yards to 246 yards in thick woods...

721 yards?  That is some damn fine shooting too.
