Hey guys im relatively new so not gonna lie there but i would like to build a ar10 but kinda do a cross plat-former i guess i want to mimic the Sass rifle that the us snipers are fielding but im planning on using it to hunt coyotes and other decent size game at distances of 800 yard but to maybe reach out to 1k maybe for paper punching. price wise i really am not worried its a project so its going to take me a while to do. reason im choosing the ar10 is i have a bolt action in 308 and its a nasty little tack driver and shes a awesome coyote killer at distance.
but my real problems is this and hoping for guidance from you jedi-masters hopefully, i know if i go buy a sr-25 style barrel i need to run sr-25 style BCG, with that im having a hard time finding the barrel that works with my loads. i normally run a 24" bull barrel 1-12 twist amax hornaday with 35 grains of imr 4064 now thats my load on my bolt and its a decent load but i cant find 1/12 twisted barrels and i plan to hunt with this so im looking for having a gun i can carry into the field, ive looked into kriegers, amalite, dpms, fulton and i cant find a barrel that suites me im looking for 1-12 twist hbar style with threaded end to run a muzzle device my state does not like silencers |

Hi Demon I own three mega ma 10 builds and have built two more for buddies. I can tell you this.. my first build used a dpms sass barrel that took two mules and a young boy to get it up to my shoulder....sooo its gone bye bye..listen you dont need a crazy heavy super long barrel to shoot good groups at distance... three of my builds use 18" medium profiles and my new one just finished is a 16" barrel.....the 18" barrels shoot sub moa at 500 yds. the 16" will go to the range tomorrow.look...you dont need a 1 in 12 twist....Rainier's off the shelf barrels will do the job!...everyone wants to be a sniper these days |

Just because your bolt action with 1:12 barrel likes your current load does not necessarily mean an AR308 with 1:12 will perform the same.
I personally went with 1:10 because it shoots all the light weight bullets the same, but will also handle the heavier bullets as well. Completely off course, but I went with a Rainier Arms 1:10 medium profile. I like my guns to be more than just bench guns, so I tend to choose lighter profiles. You can always buy a barrel blank to your specifications and a barrel extension then have a rifle builder chamber and thread the barrel and piece together the extension and chambered barrel blank. So any 30 caliber blank in your twist rate and contour, which opens up your options. |
