Situation: New DPMS Recon (comes factory Magpul Collapsable stock, 16 in Barrel).

Question: When is it nessecary to used the modified heavy buffers and springs for the 308.  I am familiar with the 5.56 world are various length gas systems, how about the 308––is the stock buffer/spring system reliable or no?

I would shoot it, and of there are problems, then look at changing things.

However, my MOE has been gtg with factory buffer / spring.

DPMS rifles generally tend to be overgassed, so a stiffer spring and/or heavier buffer could reduce felt recoil, increase lock time, increase parts life, etc.  Look at your ejection angle.  Your brass should be ejecting from around 3 o'clock to around 4:30.  Overgassed will eject from about 1 o'clock to 3.

The DPMS RE used with a collapsible LR-308 stock is the same length as the AR15.  DPMS uses a short buffer to make up for the longer BCG of the LR-308.  Slash has some options for the LR rifles.

No it is not "necessary" as the stock parts will function.

Many people have upgraded certain parts though. Many believe that 308s are over gassed so they replace the gas block with an adjustable gas block. There are adjustable gas blocks with a locking detent to keep the adjustment screw from backing out. Some use a heavy buffer too. Using both should be ideal. It supposedly tames the over gassing problem reduces recoil significantly.

I might be doing both upgrades in the future with my MEGA MA-TEN. I'll likely start with the adjustable gas block before paying over $125 for a buffer.
